This 30-second Droid spot started airing last night during the ALCS. Dan may not like it, but even so there's no denying that Verizon, in the words of Matt Buchanan, went totally balls in with an Android phone.

An Android 2.0 Motorola phone, to be precise, which we'll officially get to see sometime in November.

Until then, we can feast on rumors and speculation, revel in the broadside Verizon fired against Apple (not AT&T, it should be noted), and of course dissect the actual marketing itself, as was done at Daring Fireball.

Notes Fireball, the entire site is in flash (clever!), the commercials will be in heavy rotation during today's football games (watch!), and, most importantly, that the small print says "Droid is a registered trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd., licensed to Verizon" (what?!).

All interesting stuff, yes, but is it weird that the biggest bit of news out of all this, to me, is that George Lucas controls the word droid? [Verizon, Daring Fireball]

I'm really looking foward to this coming out, especially since my new every two will be up in december. It seems that all the new dataphones are requiring a data plan like the blackberry does... Any speculation about whether this will too?(I'm almost sure they will require a data plan). I'm hoping there's some way I could get out of it because esp if it has wifi, I'd never use the internet on it at all.

I seen the ads, looked neat. My iPhone does most of the shit it was saying that it can't do though. Not like I need flash or a 5 mp camera, which is what it couldn't do. I would trade my iPhone for an htc hero though. Those babies look sweet.

I'm getting my first data phone soonish, so either going to go with the droid phone or blackberry storm 2, which is supposedly pretty kick ass now.

I was gonna buy an Iphone this month. But, now I think I will wait.

They're only just going to start offering the iPhone here in South Korea... Apparently there were issues about making it compatible with the networks here. Not sure it'll even do that well since there's so many other smart phones already on the market here for years... My husband is planning to get one, mainly for work, and his company is currently writing software for an iPhone app. No idea if there's any plans to release android phones over here at all...

I hate the Cult of St. Steve of Jobs, but I wound up with an iPhone 3GS anyway because it's the best point product on the market in its space.

I suspect that come November I'll still be cursing Apple for making a great product and AT&T for having a lousy network, but not really thinking I'd be better off with anything else.

I guess a marketing plan like this means that Verizon isn't getting iPhones any time soon. Sad. I'd really rather use their network.

I saw this yesterday too and was praying it was a Verizon thing. I appreciate the value of having an iPhone if you live in the sticks, but the AT&T network seems to suck downtown, whereas I never have issues with my Verizon phone.

Also, inb4 it costs eight million dollars.

I have always been an apple hater. Even after I got an iPod I still hated apple. But my phone happened to completely die on me just as the iPhone 3G came out. I took a look at it in the AT&T store and fell in love. The touch screen and seemingly fast web browsing even when not using Wi-Fi is what sold me on it. But I was living in the Los Angeles area still when I first picked it up. So I never had to experience the dropped calls or shitty 3G coverage of AT&T that other people around the country had to deal with. I always thought to myself "It couldn't be that bad". Then I moved. Ended up having to pay a huge amount of money to get out of the contract since I moved to an area that didn't have any AT&T coverage within 10-15 miles of my house.

Been without a cell for a while now and have been looking at Verizon phones. Hate most of them but was just about to settle on the Samsung Rogue later today. Glad I noticed this thread. Waiting a little longer for a phone that might give me the same pleasure to use as my iPhone is worth it. Hopefully it is comparable though. Every "iPhone killer" that has come out seems to be only better in maybe 1-2 areas and severely lacking in all others. Wouldn't think it would be too hard to clone the useabilty of a phone thats been out quite some time now.

Before the Iphone came out you guys want to know which company was hated the most as in got the most complaints? That's right it was Verizon.


It's not just that AT&T has a shitty network which they do its that there servers can't handle the load of all data usage which is why you can't download files over 10mb unless your jailbroken or using Wifi.

that being said I'm gonna look hard at this phone.

All I know is AT&T is not offered in MT and With Verizon's buyout of AllTell we are stuck with Verizon. I am stoked about this phone but am still hoping to hear that Verizon is going to get the HERO because I hear the OS is pretty good.

PS: Verizons $40/mo unlimited data plan is fail but once again its all we have up here

AT&T nickle and dimes the shit out of you. I had verizon up until about a month ago when I switched to sprint. I have unlimited minutes, data, texting, etc for $120 for two lines compared to just 2100 minutes on verizon cost me $130. For AT&T it ran $160 for one line.

I live in "the sticks" in comparison to most of the populous, although I live in a pretty decently sized town. AT&T coverage here is phenomenal. So is Verizon though. Been with AT&T for about 10 years and they've always been fantastic to deal with. As I said earlier, I'd trade an HTC Hero for my iPhone in a second, but, the makers of the commercial clearly have never used a jailbroken iPhone.
