OP, I'm pretty sure you can simply mention an incoming drug test without getting into every single specific, unless you want to. Long as you're cool with them saluting you and then opening the door from here on out, go ahead with your full disclosure. But I don't think you'll have a problem with being straightforward with your request. Just don't be shallow and pedantic.

you should be able to seal the place up better. Is there a large crack under the door? Put a towel in it. Buy one of those window fans that has 2 fans that can change direction- set one to blow in and the other to blow out, that will circulate the air well. Or have both blow in, that will create (possibly) a current of air that will move out the door rather than in.

There wouldn't be enough THC in your system to show. Most of the THC is already absorbed by their lungs. All they're really blowing out is CO and CO2 etc...

I'm sure it's listed somewhere in the lease (theirs and yours) that doing things that disturb your neighbors is prohibited. Its just that, in this case, their actions happen to be (technically) illegal.

As such, you couldn't really be faulted for calling the police, but if you have a problem with being a rat, then settle it the same way you would if they were playing loud music at 3am. Ask em to do something about it, or call the landlord.

You don't have to be aggressive about it. If they're cool dudes as you say they are, then just ask em to ventilate a little better. I recommend the aforementioned window-fan, except for them rather than you, or turn on the exhaust fan above their stove (assuming they have one. I think they're pretty standard in most apartments).

I would try talking to them directly first. If that doesn't work, call the landlord. If that doesn't work, call the Police. If that doesn't work, buy a shotgun.

If you are applying to the Canadian Navy it is illegal for them to ask for ANY FORM of drug test. Unless there are extenuating circumstances (which should not be the case for a Navy position) it is illegal for any job in Canada to ask you for a drug test. For my degree program I've had to take 3 years worth of business and consumer law in addition to growing up with parents working in the HR dept. of large corporations.

However if you are applying to the Navy in the US, this is a different story - but as far as Canada goes your fine for the job.

As far as your neighbors go, its difficult to deal with it in some cases. As much as you may want to have them evicted, unless they are directly violating the laws of their lease agreement it can be difficult to do so. Read up on the terms and conditions of your lease and go form there, if your rules say no smoking or anything about illicit drugs then bring it to the attention of the building supervisor.

Test isnt gonna show up a significative amount of THC to be considered drug use at all.

The stupid thing to do would be to drink alot of water because then they're gonna think you have something to hide.
I'd just tell the supervisor of the test you're worried aboot that and I wouldn't bother the neighbours if they're as nice as you say.

Yeah basically the people who've said "don't worry about it, its not enough" are right. It wont be enough to say "hey this guys a pot head" and I wouldnt even mention it. If they say something about it, just say "people around me smoke it" or "i was at a concert" etc.

AND since you're in canada, and its decriminalized there, it shouldnt really matter now should it?

I just don't like having to breath it in all the time. I don't like the smell of marijuana at all. It gives me a headache.

I think I *should* be okay with the drug testing, if in fact there is a test. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I don't believe that marijuana is decriminalised in Canada, just almost decriminalised. I smell pot smokers all the time in my neighbourhood. I'm sure that some police officer has noticed at some time or another.

Pot is still illegal in Canada, but police officers often ignore charging someone with it because the laws are simply so lax. A friend of mine was found with an ounce of pot on him and he was only given a $75 ticket and allowed to keep the weed.

As Ive been told by PO's and people in the drug testing business, you'd have to be in a car with 6 guys all smoking like 4 blunts each to the head to get any type of traces from second hand contact. As most the thc is lost and filtered when reaching the air or thru their lungs.

as for not liking the smell, i feel sorry for you. buy one of the ionic air filters and candles.

and if need be, the best way to approch them if you cant think of a way, is to tell them you are actualy allergic and u've been breaking out in hives lately, if they arent douche bags they should respect you.

It seems by the way you speak that you don't want to bother those guys with what they are doing and would rather try to avoid any conflict whatsoever. It is up to you to decide whether or not you feel comfortable enough to talk to them, or your apartment complex, or your recruiter.

However, the other posters are right. The smell may get through, but in no way would any smoke travel THAT far and NOT dissipate. Trust me, to get any kind of contact buzz, you would need to be in the same SMALL room enclosed like a steam room. You will have NO problems with your test. Even if you're worried, drink a few gallons (lolnotmetric) of water a day for a 5-7 days before the test. Your body will be cleansed thoroughly enough where nothing would show up.

Ahaha, leaving a note under the door is such a passive-aggressive woman-y thing to do. My girlfriend would do the same thing.

Unless you've smoked with them a few times recently I doubt you'll have enough to show up on the test. Generally when people smoke pot THC builds up in their fatty tissues (because it's a lipid), which means there's always some level of it in their blood. How long it'll be detectable depends on what tests they're using and how active your enzymes are. They'll probably be able to detect it up to a week after the last joint though.

Also, there's no point in "drinking lots of water" really. They are looking for metabolites of THC in your urine, but they'd have to be stupid to not correct for urine concentration. If you could figure out how exactly they determine urine concentration then you could probably rig the test so it wouldn't look like you'd flushed your system, but it's probably not worth doing.

One more thing, I'd assume that if you can smell the smoke then you're getting THC. Smells are generally carried by non-polar aromatic compounds not entirely different from THC.

Don't worry about it. But you're probably going to worry about it, so consider trying to seal your apartment off better (around the door, maybe get one of those active air filter things, etc.)

The bigger concern is obviously that you get headaches because they smoke up all the time. It's pretty much an unworkable situation because anything that'd help you would necessarily influence their lifestyle. Solution is to go into the military and not come back until your lease runs out?

Ive passed many drug tests very easily by just drinking water, but the one time I did fail, I tried to use the "I dont smoke but my friends do" excuse to the doctor, and he said that since it was secondhand, it was impossible to test positive. Not gonna say that it is completely true, but thats what the doctor said.......
