I've been jonesing badly for some seriously SNES JRPGs with 3-5 dudes on the side getting serious on some stats and weaponry but I don't want to play the PS1 SE comps for the 57th time bleh
I have an SNES Emu anyone know where to find some good translated ROMS?
Suikoden series was good, i loved it :D i recomend 1-2 if you could find them X_X;;
Suikoden 1 is on the PSN if you have a PSP/PS3. I think its $5.99?
np ps3 yet, thanks for the heads up though :D
Of it's generation really. Phantasy Star *for it's day* was an epic level of literature. In a day when RPGs were as predictable and in-your-face as they could be(on purpose, lest the player be "confused"), the Phantasy Star series had a level of minutiae unheard of at it's time in a console RPG... It had the "plot" and the much much subtler Meta-Plot, which you really only picked up on through very nebulous ties to the previous games in the series. It was a masterpeice of it's generation, and imho, trumped anything on any system at the time, and honestly practically till today.Phantasy Star IV (really the best RPG for Genesis)
PS2 gets honorable mention for having the most depressing ending ever in an RPG.
mario RPG
paper mario for N64 ....the game kind of works on a N64 emulator. can get a little glitchy though
EVO for snes is pretty fun. can waste a day playing that.
someone already mentioned it but Grandia is really fun and pretty unique.
I love Breath of Fire. All of em were good cept for Dragon Quarter. Breath of Fire 3 is actually my favorite game. Ever. I know it's simple and stuff but it's so great
everything else has pretty much been mentioned.
You just nostalgia'd HARD

Soul Blazer, although I haven't played it in years, so it may just be teen nostalgia kicking in. At the time I thought it was an awesome Zelda style action rpg on the snes.

Also giving props to the Grandia games, although the first one has some of the worst voice acting ever. Sony America really fucked that one up.
Someone mentioned DQ VII and wondered why it didn't do well. I loved the game, but I can tell you exactly why it didn't do well, it's too old school for it's own good. By the time it came out in the US it was at the end of the PSone's life span and graphically it looked like a late 16 bit or early 32/64 bit gen game. The gameplay is about as old school jrpg as you can get and the game is long as hell. Seriously, I'm the only person I've ever talked to that managed to beat the game in under 100 hours, and it still took me 95~ish, everyone else I've talked to has been in the 110-120~ish area, and that's just for the main game, not including the bonus dungeon which will be another 20+ hours. The story was a bit strange, and hard to get into for someone just trying to casually play the game. People at the time where expecting a Final Fantasy style game, some thing graphically pretty and with a fairly accessible story, and they got none of that, so sadly the game was killed by bad press and bad word of mouth. Still it is a good game and worth playing if you're a hardcore jrpg fan.
I watched Kiarax stream pretty much all of Grandia II, I thought it looked badass.
Went back and tried Grandia on PSX, just couldn't get into it though... :/
Nintendo and C64 games that need to be remade:
Crystalis, Magic of Sheherazade, Legacy of the Ancients, The Battle of Olympus
Since I haven't seen it mentioned (if it was, I missed it) I'll throw down Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. I loved both of those games.
The fuck did you just have me watch.
Anyways, another game
Azure Dreams
Also, with pre-CD era games.
1. Just grab the emulators. (Snes9x & Gens for example)
2. Go to GameFAQs and open tabs for for the systems you have emulators for.
3. Check the RPG sections for a list of games for those systems. (Japan only games USUALLY don't have a FAQ)
4. Head to your favorite torrent site, find the gigantic roms torrent, and download EVERY RPG.
5. Pick a game and play it, you generally can't go wrong.
You may miss a few games that are multi-genre. And it won't take very long to torrent, the files are so small that you won't even miss the HD space.
Dragon Warrior 1,2,3, and 4 NES.
I know its not an RPG but if were talking N64 remakes, Goldeneye should be number 1.
ffffffffff, totally forgot about Phantasy Star IV. THANKS
