    Windows 7 Starter

If I get some small Intel Atom ultraportable thing with Windows 7 Starter, can that easily be replaced with a regular Windows 7 version, or will I run into difficulties depending on the hardware of the device?

I don't think I could be happy with Windows 7 Starter on anything. It's so weak, it isn't even capable of using a different wallpaper. I can't imagine it would be able to handle anything more intensive.

If Starter runs on a particular device (not a conventional laptop, but a bit more specialized device), are the other versions guaranteed to work?

I think the Intel Atom machines are pretty close to regular computers, close enough that it should work

It should be exactly the same process. Atom machines aren't really too different from full-size notebooks. Different processor, different motherboard. That's it.

AFAIK, every Windows 7 install actually installs all the files for an Ultimate install, and just locks features and which services run at boot. Windows Anytime Upgrade, which you can access in Computer -> Properties will let you pay Microsoft over the internet and upgrade your system to a higehr version of the OS immediately and without any installation of new files, just by unlocking the locked features with a new registration code. You shouldn't even need to reboot.

So I could get a small device with Windows 7 Starter, and upgrade it to Professional or Ultimate with all the new services and features active without even rebooting? Cool.

Well, we sell Anytime Upgrade boxes at work to go from Starter to Home Premium, and all there is in the box is a card with a registration code, so that is the best I can tell. No disc is there, and Anytime Upgrade says you don't need a disc.

Could I purchase a professional CD-Key and just upgrade using that, or does it have to be an MS Anytime-Key?
