What's a layman's definition of a Libertarian? I thought that they were way out there liberals but apparently they're so liberal they're conservative? Or so conservative they're liberal? My husband tried to explain it to me once but I find American politics to be a confusing quagmire.

Libertarians hold more to a "do whatever you want as long as it doesn't negatively effect another." Basically, it's having maximum individual liberty. Unfortunately there are numerous people that call themselves Libertarian, but are not. This muddies the message, and has made the tag have a broad range. The name comes from Liberty, not Liberal which causes people to think Libertarians are liberal. Check lp.org for more information.

Basically, it's anti-big government, pro-free market system, low taxes, and decriminalizing drugs*. There are more issues than that, obviously, but it's primarily about taking responsibility for yourself.

* - Some Libertarians are legalize everything for population control. Some are only legalize pot which is primarily in regard to not having prison populations out of control/draining taxpayer money.

Minarchist / Local Government. Pretty much the smallest Government possible without being in Anarchy. Liberty and all that.

Basically in a utopian Libertarian society there are lots and lots of self supporting local communities that determine their own laws and rules. So where in the South it would be ok to lynch colored people, witches, and homosexuals in these local communities it is better than a big federal government because they had the freedom and liberty to do that!

If you think this is being exaggerated take a look at these totally uninhibited, local, non-federally regulated tribes in Africa and South America that burn witches, conduct food raids and scalping raids, abduct children and women and use rape as a weapon.

Archaic tribes in my Amurrica? It's more likely than you think.

and protect people's civil rights on a national basis regardless of ignorant and dated 'local' views on topics.

Except no. Personal Liberty overrides some Klansman dislike of Nigs. Local government means deciding where your tax money goes and not having Washington decide whats best for your community.
