In Aion you can easily afford decent/good gear with just the currency you make leveling up normally.
    Problem with FFXI is SE thought 15% drop rate on items was good, that combined with NO grey drops for misc cash or any random green item like wow/aion and given to stop RMT they hit the biggest money makers that players used rather then finding the person with 100 alchemy who hasn't logged out in 3 weeks who is still synthing remedies.

    They nerfed mining which was my big money maker, they hit a few other places like korrloko tunnel but didn't put anything back in just like when they said they removed 12billion gil from circulation and didn't think that would hurt the economy at all?

    Before, IGE used to operate as the wholesale and the product was farmed by them, sold by them. They now operate as a hub or middleman company for certain (not all) video game currencies.

    Spoiler: show

    Person A. goes to website, buys gold. Payment is sent to IGE.

    From there IGE contacts overseas a thirdparty group that personally farms the gold, IGE makes agreement with them on price. Gold is delivered to you by those small farmers.

    Not IGE represenatives. Which ultimately is the loophole currently.

    So back to my original statement to your question, did it stop RMT? Yes, it did stop IGE for a short time with WoW. Did it permanently in the long run. No.

    It is not like IGE is even the main source for gold buyers, RMT, what not. They are usually overpriced in almost every game if you compare sites.

    There are 100's of gold sites for WoW, and just because IGE stopped for a month or used some secondary means doesn't mean shit; holy shit...come on.

    Except that a lot of RMT are Americans; one of my friends paid for most of his college living expenses selling WoW gold.

    What WoW did was make buying gold pretty much unneeded. Spend 30 min doing dailies and make more gold then the average player would ever need.

    ^This. If FFXI had a way for players to make money solo that didn't involve hours of playtime or a 10% drop rate, RMT would not have been so bad.

    I still believe Square-Enix has it's fingers in the RMT business still. ~_~;

    The game itself was to blame. Mobs didn't drop gear or items worth NPC'ing. There weren't that many ways to make gil back in 03/04 unless you were in an HNMLS. The JP's having a huge head start on crafting and HNM's themselves just made it that much worse. Aion on the other hand is ridiculously easy to make kinah. That doesn't mean that RMT isn't still a problem, but i myself don't notice it as much when compared.
