Anyone know a good crafting route to having WW high enough to repair Lu Shang's? Also, about how much gil should I expect (on average) to spend getting it there? Getting closer to 78 fishing skill and planning on fishing for ebisu if the cost of leveling WW isn't too bad. Been looking over some old-ish guides I've found around, but I'm curious if someone has done this more recently has insight into the more current economy.

It's been awhile but as much as I can remember WW is really really cheap to level up until you got to 97/98ish and that's been fixed now as well. Any of the old guides should be fairly accurate and you can also check ffrecipe to see if there's anything cheaper due to WoE/Abyssea.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Wasn't sure if things had drastically changed for WW or not, so it's good to hear old paths should be fine. I hadn't found the FFRecipe site yet either, so thanks for the link.

Said this to a few people in-game recently: fishing your own ebisu fish may not be worth your time especially with gugs. Calculate how much gil per hour you're "saving" fishing your own ebisu fish, then calculate the gil per hour you can make doing other things you've done to make gil. Compare and go with what makes you the most gil per hour, even if that's something as simple as going into abys-tahr and farming pop items to sell on the AH for 20k+ each then do that, then buy your ebisu fish. Also contact people on your server via /tells and see how low they will go, just promise them you will buy only from them, and not at a higher price from the AH because you want more right away...

I seriously want to rage when people tell me they're going to sky to farm crystals to save gil when they're 2k a stack.

Yeah, I've been debating for a while if it is worth trying to fish them myself or not. The prices on Bismarck actually seem fairly stable on the AH at ~20k per fish (liks and gugs). I only recently returned after a LONG break, so I don't really know other fishers, but there's at least one listing Liks on FFXIAH in Bazaar I could contact. The main reason I was asking about WW is, if the price of leveling seems cheap, I might level it anyways. Eventually I'll probably want it at 60, so if leveling a little past for now to repair Lu and supplement what fish I can get (if AH runs dry or I can't find someone to purchase from) isn't that expensive, it may be worth it even if I later decide to take a different craft to 100.

What would help make the decision is an idea of how many liks or gugs I could potentially get an hour fishing with lu shangs vs how many breaks I'd have to repair (cost). That info I haven't really been able to find.

Trust me, I'm the same way. Especially when I have to calmly explain to friends why farming some things like ultra-rare scroll drops off trash mobs is not actually saving money vs buying them (the majority of the time). Opportunity cost! Know it! /shakesfist

EDIT: A friend of mine who returned is actually a 82 WW and like 54 alchemist (hello shihei) and he has a Lu Shang's. Unfortunately, he also has 0 fishing GP, or I'd just buy from him. This does make me a little hesitant to level WW though, as it'd be more useful between us to have a variety of crafts leveled. Plus, if I started making shihei for profit, we'd have to ration ourselves to avoid market overflow.

If they're AHing at 20/20 on your server you should be able to find a private seller for 15k each np. Just /tell people who have been the Seller on the AH, and check Selbina for mules bazaaring near Zaldon. I do know that someone posted some decent numbers awhile back as to gugs, and I think it averaged to about 3 fish per boat ride, but that MAY have been with Ebisu. I wouldn't be surprised if you averaged 2-3 per boat ride with Lu, the shittiest part being you'll need 2x albatross ring assuming you're legitimately fishing to be able to ring charge each time the boat takes off. You should get more Liks per hour based on the sole fact that you're not sitting at a dock every 13 minutes.

edit @ the WW discussion, I did it to 60 a long long time ago, and it was pretty easy making arrows all the way up barring a few minor bridge synths. But I don't know if there are arrows beyond 60, very well may be now with new options.

Alright, thanks for the advice. It sounds like it might be best for me to just buy gugs, but I may test out liks if/when I can get my hands on the rings I'd need. Now to just hope I'm not one of the ones that goes 1/1400.

Should be able to reel in Liks with just albatross which is quite easy to get.

Yeah looking at the sellers on ah is the easiest. Or in my case looking at the buyers since I want to sell. It's not bad even going a little under going price it's still generally more profitable than Hak's... that being said gugru should be higher than lik... you can catch so many more lik in the same amount of time. Plus getting back onto the boat is annoying.

But yeah most people are willing to go a bit lower if they know you are buying a whole bunch.

As far as farm gil vs fishing up... well while I like the argument in principal and would generally use it the problem with it nowadays is anyone can farm gil faster than you can fishing even with an ebisu fishing rod. At which point you have to ask yourself why are you getting it.

The main reason is the ease of fishing (especially botting) vs doing other stuff. Even legitly fishing you can watch tv while barely paying attention or posting here with the worst thing happening is you miss 1 bite here and there. Farming otherwise unless you are like afking in a cruor pt involves real attention and work. Now if it's because of sheer laziness you chose that then ok but usually it's done more out of can't (got other shit to do) or you just can't stand playing (or don't have the attention span) and then real farming and you want to play as well. Which makes me wonder why you'll do it now but not later lol.

Personally when I did my first one it was back when farming was crap and getting an ebisu really meant not much at all. So it was better to fish up a 2nd lu shangs and fish gugrus up (lik I got lucky and fished up 12 before my first rod break at lvl 78 and one of them had the item) till I got bored then fished up money fish for the rest of my fatigue real fast and then played for fun... or went to sleep if I had work lol. But this was because while Gugrus weren't the fastest gil/hr fish with all the breaks I could cap fatigue really fast and they were by far the best gil/fish. And like I said farming sucked and I didn't feel like soloing god pops or something.

I was gonna run some napkin math on how long it would take to turn a day's catch into Shihei (and came up with 8 hours from Nebimonite ink, 15 hours from Squid), when I realized I'm not entirely sure about my HQ rate knowledge.

The model I use is that at all tiers of HQ rate, those HQs will be divided into 12/16 HQ1, 3/16 HQ2, 1/16 HQ3. From there you just apply the synth's probability of HQing based on tier, and you can calculate some expected returns. I go with 1% T0, 10% T1, 25% T2, 50% T3. How does this jive with what everyone else has come to believe?

If you're asking about the distribution of HQ levels when you're at Tier 3, this is some related data.

At T1, my data which I collected to disprove the HQ3 on Sole Sushi shows ~6% HQ rate, curiously close to 1/16=.0625. Definitely far from 10% at a sample size I think we can all be comfortable with.

    Code:
    Total synths: 5141

        NQ 4836
        2x Sole +1 235
        3x Sole +1 70
        4x Sole +1 0

Any good bridge synth @81.x smithing before I do Adaman Ingots? I used up all of my darksteel sheets from before for the crappy nodowa. At this point I'm also considering using the food and do adamans.

Colossal Axe from Gokku's post (if available)
    anything else?

I'm probably reinventing the wheel here, but multi-craft synths definitely seem to have higher break rates. At the moment I'm 15:50:35 on Break:NQ:HQ with Bronze Bullets (Tier 2).

Also, back in the day I remember people being ridiculed for being unable to tell the difference between an HQ1 and HQ3 from the animation. Now, I play muted, but I certainly can't tell the difference until I see the chat log. What is with that?

Yeah there is a noticable difference in multi craft synths, particularly in ones with 3 crafts. Skilling on urushi (3 crafts) was painful. I don't have anything in terms of data on those since it was long ago but I may be able to dig up some silver bullet data from pre-macaron age.
