New Windows 7 laptop, Ventrilo issue

So I just got a new laptop because my old one liked to shut off every 5 minutes. I got everything set up just how I like it again. Yay!

The only problem I've come to is that it seems that if a window isn't focused, sometimes it'll put a hold on what it's doing. Not all that much of a problem with things like the internet, but with Ventrilo...

I'm not all that good with explaining, so I'll give an example.

I talk to someone on my Vent server about the homework I'm doing. We have a conversation, and I go afk for a bit, having put Firefox up before I left. I come back, click the Vent window to see who's still on, and I get a few minutes of talk regarding that topic, and that person hasn't spoken in an hour. In addition, any other event like people's conversations, people joining leaving, etc, all come in late.

Is this a Windows setting? A Vent setting I'm missing? Like I said, it's mostly an annoyance with Vent. Not sure if my IMs do it yet either, they don't seem to be. I'm leaning towards a Vent issue but I dunno what to look for.

From searching around this seems to be a pretty common problem with Vent and Windows 7 and even on the actual Ventrilo forums the results with solutions are fairly mixed. Here are some solutions I've found that some people are reporting as working:

I recently installed Win7 and I started having this issue. After checking various sites and suggestions (including the screenshot posted here) nothing worked. Lastly, I tried resetting the priority of the program and thank goodness it worked.

Here is what I did:

* Opened Vent and signed in.
* Ctrl+Alt+Delete > Open Task Manager
* Under the programs tab > Right click the program and click on "Go to Process" (this take you to the process tab)
* Right click on the process, scroll down to Set Priority and set it to 'Realtime'


Unfortunately, I've had to make this change each time I login however I'm sure it can be fixed. Regardless though, this has eliminated the issue and I'm back to normal.

in vent setup/voice-binds-speech tabs, are the output/input devices set to realtek?
try testing with checking or unchecking 'use directsound'

Should just have to be higher than normal. I have the same problem, there's apparently no fix for it besides that, and there's unfortunately no way to set it to do it automatically as Vent's thread priority changes whenever you connect to a server.
