The people watching didn't help because they probably thought it was part of the play/dance!

Not trying to defend rapists, but there have been several instances of "rape" in the news in the past few years which have turned out to be fake or false. Rape is terrible, but crying wolf or lying when it can result in people's lives being ruined is pretty fucked up too.

I think the suggestion that the cops found quite a bit of evidence for rape and have issued arrests for the offense doesn't leave open a very wide possibility that this is a false accusation. That some false accusations make headlines does not indicate a high rate of victims lying to cover their sweet, slutty asses.

According to the SF Chronicle article I read, the rape occurred in a dark alleyway just outside of the school, not on campus like the CNN article says. The victim was 15 and some of the attackers and witnesses were 18+ and not students at the school. Nobody tried to help while it was taking place, but rumor eventually spread to an off-campus party where someone called the cops. The attackers stole the girl's jewelry, as well.

One of my friends spent 8 months in jail because a girl accused a group of friends for gang rape. The others got out on bail, and one of them wasn't even there when it happened, she just threw his name in there. From all accounts the girl consented to it, and later was found prostituting herself in SF and all charges were dropped.

A vague newspaper report isn't going to convince me that a rape occurred, even an unconscious girl isn't enough, she could of been drunk etc. As for the jewelry thing, the Bay Area, especially the parts where this took place have a "keep a bitch broke" mentality. Breaking a bitch for her money and possessions isn't abnormal during a consensual interaction.

On top of that, there is no evidence that the attackers stole it, it could of been any of the onlookers.

As far as California law goes, if you are part of a group while a crime is being committed, and you don't notify authorities or try to stop it, you are just as guilty as the guys who actually did it. I had friends do 9 and 10 years for just that situation, but that's a different story.

It's not rape if she's unconscious due to alcohol?

No, someone said she may have been knocked out by one of the participants. I was saying alcohol may have contributed to the state in which she was found. I can see why that looks odd though.

According to some frats, it is most certainly not rape if she gets drunk.

If she's so drunk she can't give consent it's still rape, mate.

    As Kuya was saying

    It's called the bystander effect.

The bystander effect is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help in an emergency situation when other people are present. The probability of help is inversely proportional to the number of bystanders. In other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.

I don't know why some people in this thread are denigrating the people who watched those incidents. Specifically the genovese one. It's not so much that the people there were uncaring or cowards, but rather that they weren't sure if someone else who was more capable was going to help, so they wait back to see if someone else goes first and calls for help. It's a situation similar to how when you walk into a person and try and walk past them, but it just so happens that they pick the same side as you repeatedly.

Anyway, usually the solution to the situation is for the victim to call out a specific person for help (and this person will usually help if called upon). Or someone who is very impulsive happens to be in the crowed.

You'd be hard pressed to argue interfering with a gangrape or calling the cops would make things worse.

I'd charge every single one of them with everything possible, that's some fucked up shit.
Idk I think it could of been worse if someone tried to interfere. I mean 5+ guys who are trying to nut don't get to nut = pissed off dick in hand mob @ your face

I'm not sure there is evidence given she was unconscious during the act, I think they said they found her unconscious.

Anyone who has chugged liquor knows that you progressively get drunker as time goes on, you don't reach the drunkest you will get right away. I think I've read that liquor has a maximum as to how fast it can be absorbed into the blood, but I'm not 100% on that.

Edit: the point of me posting the drunk thing, was to show that we shouldn't jump to the conclusion that she was knocked unconscious. I was just adding another possibility.
