As hilarious as this sounds, it's actually a serious issue(not just in New Orleans).

New Orleans lower classes speak an entirely different language than the rest of the city, let alone the state/country.

There's nearly 700 dialects and 20ish~ creole English languages spoken in the USA, and we grossly over-estimate how much mutual-intelligibility there is among them.

Most of the country does in-fact not speak "Standard American English(SAE)"(calling it standard is hugely discriminatory in and of itself), which is spoken/written primarily by middle-upper class white folks. Which is like <20% of the population. When all of the news media is written in SAE, yes, it's an issue for certain regions in which SAE is not mutually-intelligible, this is much more pronounced where they speak an English based Creole(like NO) as opposed to just a regional dialect.
