Gardening Question

I decided to play around with Gardening a little bit and was curious about something. Is there a set time when my plants will be ready to harvest?

For the moment all I did was get some Tree Cuttings and plant them to hopefully get Tree Saplings out of the process. I planted them on the 14th of October and fed no crystals. I was thinking they were going to be ready to Harvest on the 28th. Now I've only checked this morning, so they could be ready after the JP midnight rolls around this evening.

Before I started up a farm, I do remember reading that they could take between 2-3weeks and I've never gotten a confirmed time as to when they could be ready.

Feeding "no crystal" takes 1~5 days longer, as there is no option to feed no crystal. Feeding a crystal puts the plant in the next stage right away.

Okay, thanks for that. It worked out perfectly for me. Good yield too actually.

Not too bad for a first attempt.

I planted on an Iceday, not sure of the moon phase, and picked on
a 90% full moon. I may have been able to hold off on the harvest a few
more hours, but got impatient. I got what I wanted though, a full stack of Tree Saplings. Now to decide what to do with them.

Yes, I use this recipe sometimes to grow my own saplings. It usually takes 16-17 days and your yield is about what you'd expect given the planting and harvesting conditions. There are also a bunch of variables in there that I haven't figured out yet. I run 6 gardening mules and from 5 stacks of cuttings I get about 6 stack of saplings.

One way to slightly increase your profit from that harvest would be to turn the bugs into Shellbuster Orob jugs and sell them to NPC. I always have worms lying around from fishing and crystals from just generally tooling around on my BST whacking stuff so you may want to do the math on how much you will gain from doing this. Orob is actually a decent farming jug or BST affinity jug so you might even be able to sell some of them on the AH.

Just to summarize/clarify, a plant grows in several stages:

1) Initial Planting. Only options available are "Examine" and "Empty Pot"
2) Stem Stage. "Dry Flower" appears as an option, first graphics for the plant appear.
3) First feeding stage. "Feed Crystal" option appears.
4) First Growing stage. "Feed Crystal" option disappears. Second graphics for the plant appear; "This plant is growing well" or "It's doing well" appears on examination.
5) Second feeding stage. "Feed Crystal" option reappears.
6) Second Growing stage. "Feed Crystal" option disappears, plant is still "Growing well" or "Doing well."
7) Flowers stage. Graphics change, message changes, aesthetic transition only.
8) Harvest stage. Plants are ready for harvest.

Obviously, seeds that only allow for a single feeding skip steps 5 and 6.

Feeding a crystal will automatically kick the growth out of the current Feeding Stage.

If the plant passes through either of the feeding stages without being fed a crystal or examined, the plant will die.

Because each feeding stage lasts somewhere on the order of 1-1.5 days, recipes that involve feeding crystals can shave a few days off of your turnaround vs. recipes that do not. I.E. Platinum Nuggets (cuttings+light+light) can take as little as 13-14 days, while Tree Saplings (cuttings+none+none) will take more like 16-17. Of course nuggets can take 16-17 days as well, if you wait to feed the plants until the very end of the feeding stage.

if you wanna make some extra cash, look at using some farmed water clusters and those shell bugs to make quadav bug broth. they are cheap to make and sell decently. that's what i used to do to get some extra mileage out of my garden.

While we're on the topic, anyone know why cactus stems seem so popular? Stacks appear once in a while and sell out right away, even at 60k a stack, yet at best the only recipe i can find for it is adaman ore. Granted, adaman is 22k per, but unless it's highly reliable yield, it still doesn't seem worth it. Is there any other secret I should know about, or is it really that good? <.<

I know that not feeding twice can yield light ores from saplings, but has anyone tried feeding light crystals twice to get light ore? Just wondering if it is a possible yield and if anyone tried this to skip the feeding wait time or in hopes of getting more light ores.

Nope, one of my early experiments years ago. Did not work then, and doubt it would work now.

I tried feeding twice to one group which was total fail. I think I tried testing with 1 feeding, but I can't swear to it, and I'm too lazy to go look through my gardening notes. I do recall these were some of my most frustrating attempts at gardening.

IIRC these were somewhat erratic attempts (i.e., uncontrolled), because the growth patterns are seriously messed up with light ore. Unlike all the other ores, light ore has not only a longer growth, but a great propensity to unsync with the server timing and then have a MUCH longer growth.

Early on, despite taking ardent steps to avoid it, I would invariably have desynched plants within the same batch and thus feeding and harvesting would often occur at different times on plants within the same planting cycle.

(Found out a little later how it really worked to grow them. It was lol.)
