Aw, even the old guy @1:23 takes the stairs. That was kinda nice.

The stairs would probably be ridiculously annoying at busy times with most of the keys going off all of the time.
Reminds me of the "talking fountain" in one of the terminals at Seatac airport. It was a cool thing at first, and a lot of people would use it just to hear it, but now it is just like any other drinking fountain.
Not sure how cost effective these things would be in the long run, but they are fun to see and neat ideas.
I'm pretty sure they know it wont last as well. People will always flock to something that is new then get tired of it. There's no real situation that going to make people want to throw their trash away properly, take the stairs, or recycle because people will be people, that's the real sad part.
I don't think Sigmund Freud would appreciate people using the stairs. He would probably say that stairs represent hidden sexual frustrations. By using escalators (shows we are lazy and) we satisfy the Id and the Ego returns in kind with "I feel good about myself". The super ego is not involved it is debating if watching porn is considered cheating.
Using the escalators = masturbation?
Those motherfuckers for trying something new and inventive and creating ways to get people to at least pay attention to their environment and not taking the mundane for granted.
WHAT A BUNCH OF UNORIGINAL ASSHOLES LET'S BE BLASÉ ABOUT THE WHOLE THING
This is what you're getting all angsty and worked up over. I applaud them for the concept and insight and you're belittling them for the novelty and presentation.
What are you a 6 year old calling bullshit on everything you see because you can't grasp any more than what's on the surface?
