My summer reading has been progressing nicely.

So far:

Full Dune reread
Neal Stephenson - Seveneves
Malka Older - Infomocracy
Austin Grossman - I Will Soon Be Invincible
Erik Larson - Devil in the White City
Jay Miller - Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works

I enjoyed "I Will Soon Be Invincible" the most out of everything I've read recently. It's funny, fresh, easily accessible and well-written.

I've just finished rereading dune yesterday. I love that book but never gotten around to reading the other ones. Are the other ones worth it? I've seen there are some also written by his son I think

They get wordy. Frank wasn't story telling as much as he was politicking towards the end. He didn't care and knew it. His son's two final books bring back some of that original story telling and really tie up loose ends that Frank introduced later. I really enjoyed the last of them, Sandworms of Dune. Never read his prequels, however.

I know red rising was talked about in this thread a while ago, just got around to finishing the 1st book and starting the second now. Wow, this is becoming my new favorite book series.

Yeah, I haven't had a series hook me like Red Rising in quite a while. I inhaled those books. The first one was an HQ version of Hunger Games.

It's pretty good. It was touted as a "holy shit this is amazing" book by a friend so I had the bar set high.

It's got great historical content and has a good story line but it didn't "wow" me at all.

Cool, I've bought Messiah today on Audible. Luckily it's also narrated by Simon Vance. Their narration of first Dune is awesome.

Just started Anthony Ryan's latest book, The Waking Fire. He's the author of Blood Song which was the best fantasy novel for a new author since The Name of the Wind from Rothfuss imo. Will keep you posted as I progress:

I hate audio books.

That being said, it's a decent read.

It's a giant 80's circlejerk stuck into a near-future setting. His second book is a similar circlejerk. He only has one trick, writing-wise.

It's a fun read. I love audio books, mainly because i have a two hour commute for work and it allows me to keep up on amazing books.

I thought Constellation Games was better than Ready Player One. About a dude who is wants to write reviews for alien video games after first contact.

Seconding, Constellation Games is a fantastic book.
Shame the dude hasn't written anything since.

That reminds me, there was another writer who had a good short story at the same site I first saw Constellation Games guy, and he was supposed to have his first book out soon the last I knew. Should go see about that.

About halfway through this right now and am really enjoying it. It's like Mistborn crossed with dragons and the prose/gravity of the Blood Song trilogy.

The Demon Cycle - Great series but isn't done yet (est. 2018) so you're risking some serious blueballs
The First Law - Solid technical writing, various characters (to me) had the personalities of mildew
The Black Company - YES

First Law definitely; definitely a tier above the others though the ending is superbly unsatisfying. I liked Demon Cycle more than Black Company, but it's a toss-up. One important note is that book 5 of Demon Cycle will not be out until 2017 though. Read the Red Rising trilogy if you haven't; great recently completed series.

The Black Company was just missing something for me. I tried another series / chain of events by Glen Cook (can't remember the name) and wasn't a big fan either. I think the Malazan Book of the Fallen is a superior version of the Black Company from a fantasy war epic perspective. The Chain of Dogs arc was just the best.
