First book in the Hyperion Cantos cannot be missed, read that asap if you haven't. The other 3 are also good, but the first book is a masterpiece. Zet listed a couple Cyberpunk books (Neuromancer/Electric Sheep) and while that sub-genre isn't for everyone, I'm going to throw in Snow Crash and Count Zero. Other books that would make my must read that haven't already been listed:

    The Dispossessed
    The Martian Chronicles
    The Time Machine
    The Stars Are My Destination

Missing from those lists is The Martian. But they nailed most of what I would suggest.

Imperial Radch trilogy is pretty decent. Though sometimes you wish everyone would stop talking about tea.

I can vouch for Hyperion Cantos.

C.J. Cherryh and Lois McMaster Bujold are fucking great sci fi. David Weber is really good too, but he has a GRRM-esque tendency to drown you in details and start bigger stories than he can reasonably finish.

My Oasis came today. Getting it all set up. It's smaller than I expected. I was expecting something at least as big as my Kindle Keyboards but it's like the size of a CD case. Weird. But beyond that it seems pretty good. The Collection feature is much better than it was on the Keyboard.

Just finished The Stormlight Archive book 2 and started looking at the rest of Sanderson's Cosmere books. Anyone have any recommendations on what else is worth reading? Elantris, Mistborn era 1 and 2, Warbreaker... Lot's of books to pick from.

Looks like Stormlight Archive book 3 will be out soonish so just looking for something to fill the time in between. Still waiting for Kingkiller Chronicles 3, but who knows when that will be out. I need to stop reading series that aren't finished yet.

Warbreaker first (answers a few gaps in Words of Radiance.) Mistborn Era 1 definitely. There's a big division on BG about Era 2. Some like it, others don't. It was a good enough read but Era 1 is better.

Elantris is a bit rough around the edges since that is his first published novel. Still a decent read and eventually should be read since the Cosmere novels all come from the same thread of different parts of the universe.

He also does some YA stuff. Steelheart is hit-or-miss. Concept in book 1 is sound. Kinda falls apart in book 2 and 3.

His novellas are good time burners that will leave you satisfied.

Stormlight 3 releases November. And he has Stormlight 4 slated for 2020.

It's definitely a disappointment compared to the first trilogy and I was actually getting a little bored with the Bands of Mourning book, only continuing to read it just to finish it.

Just finished the first Thrawn book and I'm definitely going to move on to the 2nd, but not sure if I'll get to it right away. I still have the third Lightbringer book I left off on, I have the Cosmere collections book to read, and on a whim, last time I was in a bookstore I picked up The Waking Fire and A Darker Shade of Magic, which will join a dozen other unstarted series i need to start.

You should check out the new canon Thrawn novel. It's pretty solid.

Yeah, I was going to check that out if I liked The original trilogy enough. I wasn't even sure if I'd like Star Wars books as I'd never read any before and personally, while I like the film's enough, I've never been on board the super hype train.

the new Thrawn book is pretty baller. I forgot the plot of the originals, but the new one kinda reminds me of a more benevolent version of Sherlock holmes or something.

I enjoyed era 2. Wax and Wayne were a decent buddy cop duo. Wayne is an interesting character.

Started Masters of Doom, bought Arthas wow book for after for some reason. Not sure what to read or what I'm really even into. I have asoiaf but haven't read them and am strictly a show watcher. I want to read silmarillion and the other recently published Tolkien book, trying to find my niche. Don't care for most Sci fi or fantasy but I do like got and lotr. Don't care for star wars or most other nerdy things.

    Why haven't you read ASOIAF?

    This is so disappointing.

I don't have an answer. It's been sitting on my shelf staring at me for years. I even tried the audio book.

Dont bother unless you plan watching the series on hbo for any closure. I'm of the mind the books will never be completed.

My fantasy itch needed scratching and I decided that I needed a break from rereading ASOIAF for the 20th time, so I picked up the first WoT book and the first of the The Magicians trilogy last Thursday. Ended up reading the whole Magician's trilogy this weekend. Was a very satisfying read.

I have been listening to The Dresden Files on my commute to and from work for a while now (I love James Marsters' voice), and was thinking about what I would listen to next. I've read ASOIAF, and have the audio books, but I think I would like to try something new. I hear WoT thrown around a lot and I don't know a thing about it so I may try that out. Does anyone have any experience with the audio books? I would be considering the free version of the audio books.

I would finish listening to Percy Jackson, but the quality is shit and I would rather listen to screws in a blender than suffer through Jessie Bernstein's narration again...

There are tons of posts in here about audio books and narrators. I personally can't pay attention to audio books at all.
