The first two are set before the Cictrix Maledictum by quite a wide margin. The third is a few hundred years before, and I'm probably 2/3 through it. Doesnt look like it stretches into the current timeline.

the last book extends to just after the fall of cadia in the epilogue. no war of the spider coverage.

Might have to check it out regardless. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a 40K novel that piqued my interest. At least not one that’s not a single story hardcover they want you to pay $25-30 for, which they seem to love doing now.

Yeah I hate their release model, it's fucking aggravating. I just bite the bullet and wait until it comes out on ebook, but sometimes the wait is so long I forget there was one inwas waiting for (I totally forgot about Valdor, for instance).

Better than paying $40 for a 400 page book though.

I just learned today that James S. A. Corey, author of the Expanse series, is in fact actually two people- Daniel Abraham of Dagger and Coin series, and Ty Franck.

    End of the month
And it's not really a novella, more like a short novel. Whoops!

Yeah its' pretty cool how they do it, they generally each right separate POV's for each novel. Also the next Expanse is the last in that series, but according to Daniel they do have a new series they will be starting on together though it will be quite different than the expanse despite still being SF. Daniel also has a new Fantasy Series coming up.

This gonna be real vague. Like... horribly so.
Looking for a stand alone novel that’s generally upbeat in overall tone. I’m not really sure what I’m looking for, I was just reading a book and they got to the part where the world’s in danger of ending and then suddenly I was like, man, I’d like to read a book where someone doesn’t have something shitty happen to them or have to stop something bad from happening. Like some kind of carefree, simple, low stakes plot. Genre, not sure. My main go-tos are fantasy/sci-fi but I’ve dabbled in mystery, thriller, biographies, historical. I’d be up for anything except probably romance. If I can pick it up for cheap on ebook, that’s a huge plus.

In novel form, I can't help you, but there is a word for it.

Started reading The Davinci Code because it was in my backlog and I figured I’d finally put a little dent in it.

I obviously pretty much know all the story elements and ending just from absorbing it through pop culture the last 2 decades, but that kind of thing doesn’t bother me. I like the story, the premise. Interesting characters.

I don’t like how he keeps mystery alive simply by going far out of his way for the character to omit <the answer to mystery> just to drag the reader along for longer. I’m also not a fan of the constant smug way he likes to throw his own views on certain things in, which is probably just the purpose of the book, but that only kind of works if what you’re saying is right. Most of this stuff he’s been toting around as truth has either been proven wrong or is so far into the conspiracy column with no corroborating evidence. But I think I can ignore it just treating it as a 100% complete work of fiction. Movie might actually be a more enjoyable experience.

Okay gang for some reason I didn't know this thread existed. Got really into reading scifi/fantasy the last couple years. Here's a list of what I've gone through so far, pretty much in the order I went

    NK Jemisin
    Inheritence 1-3
    Dreamblood 1-2
    Broken Earth 1-3

    Joe Abercrombie
    First law 1-3 + the 3 spinoffs
Shattered Sea 1-3 (kinda turned me off trying YA books)

    Brandon Sanderson
    Mistborn Era I 1-3
    Mistborn Era II 1-3
    Elantris
    Warbreaker
    Stormlight Archive 1-3

    Andrzej Sapkowski
Witcher 1-6 + the short story books

    Ta-Nehisi Coates
    The Water Dancer

    Jim Butcher
    Codex Alera 1-6

    Anne McCaffrey
    Dragonflight 1

    Mark Lawrence
    The Broken Empire 1-3

    Ann Leckie
    Imperial Radch 1-3 + spinoff

    Liu Cixin
    Three Body Problem 1

    Naomi Novik
    Temeraire 1-4

    Current:
    Temeraire 5

Feel free to give me more similar recommendations. I have so many years of not reading to make up for. I try not to pick up any ongoing series usually, GRRM burned me too badly (Brandon Sanderson is an exception to this)

    The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion.
The Expanse (starts with Leviathan Wakes- ongoing, but comes out like clockwork)
    C.J. Cherryh's work.
    Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series.
    Iain M. Banks's Culture novels.

Cherryh is probably my favorite author. I suggest starting with Downbelow Station, then the Alliance-Union books, then the Chanur series, then the Foreigner series. In any case, all of her work is set in the same universe, so it's just a matter of where/when it takes place. They are sometimes millennia apart.

I couldn't read past book 1 of Codex Alera. That final act was terrible.

    I am giving Butcher's Aeronaut's Windlass a chance though.

Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons is still one of my favorite series.

Imperial Radach was fine. Just too much fucking tea I tell ya.

I'm still too lazy to continue The Expanse. I should just audio book Nemesis Games onwards starting next year.

Codex Alera gets way way better after book 1.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Although obviously I've read LOTR, I just listed the stuff I have read since getting back into books lately haha

Finished Axiom's End (Lindsay's Ellis's book that came out a few month ago). It's a fun little First Contact story.
