recently i have read

rest of the Poppy War trilogy. writing remained workmanlike throughout and the real-world lifting would put Martin to shame but yeah quite enjoyable overall. compelling narrative + the mythos/magic system were interesting, nice to get away from fantasy dominated by the traditional Western melodies.

Caravaggio art book. chiaroscuro remains one of the coolest techniques in all art and as far as multiple-time murderer artists go he's def my fave.

The French Wars of Religion by Holt. someone should really adapt this one day literally almost every major player dies in battle or through betrayal or assassination, quite a yarn. ups to the Protestant Prince Henri winning the final war for the Prots and immediately converting to Catholicism to cement his rule in majority-Catholic France; how else could it all end except in one final stunning act of betrayal.

The Perfect Servant, history of eunuchs in Byzantium and how they operated as a distinct third gender. mostly came away thinking getting your balls cut off to be a better slave was a rough deal.

The Candy House by Egan, sequel to the pulitzer prize winnin A Visit From the Goon Squad, not as excellent but still quite excellent, truly love her writing, one of our best modern authors.

still slogging through the Horus Heresy, content is w i l d l y uneven. Scars was p great tho love u Jaghatai sorry for your loss.

i find Aaron Dembski-Bowden and Peter Fehervari the best authors in 40K with Abnett just below them, Chris Wraight right there as well. p much anytime you hit one of them bros you're guaranteed something mint.

Besides the 2nd book I thought they were all 9 or 10 out of ten. I loved em. Regardless its silly to say Brandon should skip em since I think Mistborn eras are like the backbone of what the cosmere is built around on a time scale. Especially with what we know from SP4 and RoW.

That being said...... I wish he'd skip the Elantris sequels. Elantris was mad boring. I'd much much rather get a Warbreaker sequel, and I'd kill for books set on Threnody.

I actually just finished Poppy War. I agree on it being nice to get away from the western-dominated sphere.

Torn on the writing; I think it was solid, just Rin was, uh, a rough character for me. I think it's a solid character, conflicted that so much of the book is from her POV (I get why, but).

Men at Arms - Discworld 2nd Night's Watch novel
Murderbot #7
Empire of Silence - Sun Eater Book #1
Dragonfired - Dark Profit Saga #3 (when it gets released in paperback in the spring. would have gotten it on ebook but I had no idea when the Kindle exclusive window would end. Happened to have happened over the last week)
Red God - Red Rising #7 (The end - I am predicting like everyone but Mustang is going to die. Heck no one is safe as has been the case across the entire series.)
Audiobooks of Stormlight 1-4 to prep for #5 in December

So that's 9 total novels listed (not counting the audiobooks.) I will probably hit 12-15 novels for the year. Not expecting to start Malazan despite getting all the mainline novels on humble bundle.

got to 74 books by the end of the year. 3 were short so they don't count. Still at my lowest page count in a decade though which sucks.

Gonna focus more on some non-fiction and also rounding out some series that I've never finished but should.
