I've said it before, but his strength isn't the plot, but the characters that go through it.
It's basically like seeing the same play with different casts. Which isn't a bad thing.

Been in a not-great mental spot for like the past 6 months and have read practically nothing in that time frame, but finally read a book. Sun Eater book 6. One more to go. Some things feel like the plot has repeated itself a bit too many times through the series.

Somewhat but the lens he writes from helps mitigate it for me. I am about 70% done and it's been a pretty solid ride. Not his best book in the series but a good addition.

I was, for some reason, under the impression this was the last book in the series and I was thinking it was going to be a very very bad ending, especially once Hadrian started doing his present day wrap-up he does at the end of every book. I swear I saw (6 of 6) attached to the book somewhere. I know (after looking it up trying to figure out my confusion) the series was originally supposed to be 5, but they split the last two books. Either way, yeah, it was a solid book once I realized it wasn’t the last and I ignored the parts where I was like “this really isn’t how they’re about to do the final confrontation, is it?”

I only read the first one and it was ok.

It's better than the movie but that's an incredibly low bar. I feel like the whole premise could be tweaked a bit to make it great but I think it's considered good steampunk? It was akin to latter Harry Potter books in YA book level.

Just finished Dragonfired (Book 3 Dark Profit). Took a bit for the plot threads to build up but boy did that last 1/3rd of the book turn on the jets.

5/7. Got educated on a new meaning for Human Resources.

banged out Nettle & Bone, small but verr engaging and good depth, see why it won the Hugo and almost Nebula/Locus. kind of a dark deconstruction of the modern fairytales a la traditional Grimssiam fairytales but with strong feminist subtext. the dog made out of bones stole the show. 4/5 dust-wives.

additional .1 for not being titled a/the noun of noun and noun, something needs to be done about modern fantasy naming conventions.

Is that one actually scary? I was interested but saw it tagged as horror and I can do horror movie and vidya, but books get me lol

It won the Hugo partially because Vernon was not critical of the Chinese government or wasn't controversial. She got stuck with a book printing run for Nettle & Bone that says it won the Hugo for Best Novel after she p much disowned it because Chinese bullshit.

i liked it more than Babel and it had more votes than it before Babel mysteriously stopped receiving additional votes after the first round of voting but ya fuck the CCP and the Hugo organizers for playing ball

Skyward is ok. It's not amazing.

About done with the latest Ruocchio book and it seems like he had a major issue with his publisher or something between this book and the previous one relating to how many books there would be to finish the series. He jumped ship to a new publisher and the old one refuses to print hardcovers of any of his books which is why they're like $500. Fuck those guys I want one.

Yea it's average and typical YA. Book 3 does have a fair amount of problems though. And you need to read the novellas to fill in the gaps between Skyward 2 and 4.

3 is basically basically a weird bottle novel where spensa goes to nowhere, quite literally a place called nowhere. 4 goes back to the formula and ties everything up with sanderson level detail. spensa kinda sucks.
