I just finished the Jade trilogy by Fonda Lee.

Solid reads.

I don't remember them super well as I read (most of them) around when the last one dropped back in like 2017 but I enjoyed those as well. Think I only read the Assassin/Fool/Fitz and the Fool subseries, don't recall reading the Liveship or Rainwild ones.

Elderlings is good as shit but yes a massive 16 book commitment. more character focused than a lot of fantasy (some of the best villains you'll ever meet and The Fool is a top 5 all time fantasy chacater) + the world-building is excellent, but the plot is not the focus and some find it slow. prose quality is a notch above as well, she simply writes better aesthetically than the vast majority in the field. it is also quite sad. but you loved Malazan so tragic fantasy is old hat for you by now no.

It looks like most of it is broken up into trilogies so I figured I wouldn't need to do all 16 at once (this is not the first time I say something like this and get so hooked that I can't stop reading until the entire series is finished)

I'll be honest I got distracted by the Elderlings thing and missed your question entirely, lol. Starter Villain is pretty easygoing/fun/lighthearted for sure.

The thing with Realm of the Elderlings is that the first Trilogy is by far the worst paced, and books 2 and 3 were at least for me the 2 worst books in the series by a mile. Even then I wouldn't say they are bad, just really slow and weirdly paced. So if your still on the fence about the first trilogy know that it gets significantly better as you go. It's also got the classical epic fantasy problem of every book is probably 2-300 pages too long but that's part of the fun.

It's okay. I can power through if I know theres lots of good coming after. I'm also kind of not that demanding of a reader. Give me good characters and I'll be happy

Starter Villain was a fun little side quest. I think my order of liked most would be Kaiju Preservation Society > Redshirts > Starter Villain

I've read (and reread) a lot of Sanderson this year. And well, not shockingly, the prose in Assassin's Apprentice is already on another level lol
