I was wondering why it was taking me so long to finish the book when wiki said it was only about 800 pages. Turns out Gardens of the Moon ended at 40% and the file also contained Deadhouse Gates.

Still not sure if I really like the book. Parts of it were interesting enough, but the book goes all over the place. So I guess I'll start on Deadhouse Gates now.
It really picks up a lot in Deadhouse Gates. Chain of Dogs was awesome.

Chain of Dogs is the greatest thing ever.

Finished the Riftwar Saga; was pretty good. Started really strong in the Magician then kind of plateaued through the remainder. The last book of the Chathrand Voyages finally arrived from the UK; really great series and the last book has been strong thus far. Would recommend to others.

So I finally finished "A Gathering Storm" and holy god. It was everything everyone said it would be.

    Spoiler: show
I'm getting that "Twilight" feel at the end, love conquers all cliche. It works, though. It works real well.

Tower of Midnight (next book) is by far the best in the series imo.

    I concur.

Though the best book in the world would be if someone took all the Mat parts from all the books and combined them into a single book.

Mat is by far the best character in that series. No question. I finished the series specially for his scenes.

Reading Dune for the first time. I can't believe I haven't read it yet. Anyone have a recommended reading list for the whole series? I started with the original but I have the rest of the saga on my iPad.

they're generally amazing books, read them. i haven't read any of the ones his son did though, so can't comment on anything after heretics.

Anybody got any decent zombie books? Gonna give Malazan another chance after I finish my current book but wanted to get a palate cleanser before jumping back into another huge fantasy series like that. I've read all the stand alone walking dead novels and the comics, world war z, zombie survival guide, i am legend, and a few other books that the titles are escaping me currently.

It gets heavy after God Emperor. Really great themes overall, though. The last two books by his son were great, in my opinion, and brought good story elements (you know, like suspense and action-fantasy!).

Has anybody read through Jim Butcher's other series, the Codex Alera? I would roll my eyes every time a preview chapter was tagged onto the end of a Dresden book, complete with "please please read my epic fantasy series I always loved LotR but no one would let me write my own" note from the author, but after the amazing Cold Days I figured I would finally give them a shot.

I am about 5 chapters in, and so far, it is everything that I hate about generic fantasy series. The opening scenarios for the 2 main characters could be right out of a SNES era JRPG. And they're all really really dumb. I realize that some people are cool with that, but can anyone tell me if it's worth it for me to stick this through?

I just finished reading Harry Potter & The Methods of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky, which is what HP would be like if Harry was a hyper-smart child raised by a scientist stepfather, and the contrast probably makes it extra unbearable.

Its slow to start but it gets better later on, Tavi gets pretty cool down the road, I didn't like Amara (and in case you were wondering she is not tavi's love interest.) when the other races come into play it should get more exciting?

Is that the series Butcher started on a bet that he couldn't write an interesting book based on Pokemon and Rome?

Books were not on par with the dresden files in my opinion, but they do get a lot more interesting later on. Slow to start, but I was able to get enjoyment from them as they progressed. His early dresden books seem to be quite a bit weaker in my opinion as well.
