I will say the book was good, the ending:

    Spoiler: show
it is however, a nice change to see the protagonist just give up instead of doing some heroic bullshit

so sitting for four hours in a room that was air conditioned to about 40degrees whilst I was waiting to get called into a court room for jury duty allowed my to get 20% into book 3 of Malazan. I have decided to continue reading the series.
Though I will also continue to wish the books were shorter because there seems to be a lot of unnecessary padding thrown into those books.
I also got out of having to serve on a criminal case that would have taken at least a week because one of the lawyers was my Dad. Huzzah

It really bugs me that they changed how the text on the spines were displayed.

It also bugged me that some of the Dresden Files books are white. I know what they were going for, but god damn it, I want uniformity!

nah, there's a lot of crap happens in 5, and 6, while tedious, ends pretty epic. i can share that sentiment for 7-8 though. not my favorites.

i AM assuming you're talking about WoT. i havent' read the dresden files.

Just finished Malazan book 3 Memories of Ice. Will be starting book four.
Would I miss out on much if I skipped book 5, Midnight Tides? I'm already not liking how books 2&3 happen at the same time but are nearly completely unrelated (aside from what I assume with be in the grand scheme of things), and #4 goes back to following right after #2. Not so keen on starting up on book 5 with completely new settings/characters in a story that takes place before book #1.
I'm assuming that again, it'll have some stuff that's relevant to the larger picture, but is it also mostly just used to fill in some back story for stuff that happened in the previous books or are the really relevant things that I should read through for the next books?

They become very relevant and you would miss out on some extremely awesome characters. It bothered me a bit when I first dived into book 5, but I grew attached to some of the characters very quickly.

What's the book series that Game of Thrones is based on? I don't have HBO and love to read anyway, so figure I might as well dive in.

You can find that box set at pretty much any bookstore / Costco / Walmart nowadays, and by the time you finish, the most recent book should be out on paperback.

get it on kindle if you can. cheaper, and you can wait with the nice boxed sets until the series is actually done. Because there's nothing worse than a boxed set that isn't a set.

Is his books really like that article or is there some extreme exaggerating going on? (I'm guessing there is some exaggerating, but just how much?)
because if it's even just half as bad as it was in that article, it could be a humorous read.
