Dunno if I mentioned it last time I was in here, but I've been reading the Honor Harrington books by David Weber lately. Very good. Even the short-story anthologies and young adult books; some of them have treecats as PoV characters! So that's fun.

Also, Jesif, that sounds similar to Sanctuary, the TV show. Maybe it's inspiration? Might find something by looking through stuff about that. Otherwise... dunno.

So she says that the book is kind of oldish, around 1980.

It's a comedy, science fiction and is about a caretaker that has to take care of a werewolf, vampire and a mermaid.

She says that it is very funny and he has to learn things like how to take care of the werewolf's mane.

Thanks for any help you can give!

I love Weber, pretty sure I own everything he's ever written. The Honor Harrington and Safehold series are his absolute best works.

Nice. Did you know there's a wargame (like Warhammer 40k) set in the Honorverse? Saganami Island Tactical Simulator. Little models and everything.

sooooo... I've been looking to read more again; does anyone have any non-fiction recommendations? I read through the last half dozen pages / several months of posts and everything is fiction. Or maybe knows at least some books maybe partly-completely fiction but a lot more grounded in reality (ex: If I Die in a Combat Zone, Republic, Great Expectations, etc)?

Books with things like time travel, futuristic concepts, dragons, sorcery, etc do not interest me nor does anything Renaissance based; medieval Europe bores me terribly.

Bugg and Tehol are definitely two of the best characters in series. I find myself laughing harder at their chapters then Kruppes. They also have some big secrets

The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. Vietnam war book, but straddles the line between fiction and non-fiction. Not long, and should be fairly common.

Doctor Sleep (The Shining 2) by Stephen King
Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.
    Releases on September 24th.

Once upon a time, I would have loved to see a sequel to The Shining. But after reading the sequel to the Talisman and the way he tries to tie everything into his Dark Tower mythos, I don't have much faith in King anymore. I think the last book I read by him Cell, which started out good but my interest petered out before I was done and had to force myself to finish it.
