Recently finished a short young-adult trilogy by Scott Westerfield. First book is 'Leviathan.' Setting is WWI-era, but steampunk, so a lot of the tech is way more advanced than we currently have. WWI takes the tone of Darwinists vs Clankers; that is, countries using genetically engineered beasts vs more traditional steampunk mechanicals. Pretty sure the various alliances are all the same. Anyway, it's a very interesting and well-developed setting. The main characters are teenagers, and the fact that it's a young adult book shows in the writing, but it's very fun. The hardcovers have excellent artwork reminiscent of the little doodles in Harry Potter, though much larger and more detailed. There's also a companion artwork book that illustrates the various beasts and crafts encountered throughout the trilogy.

Very fun series, and a quick read. Would recommend. Hoping the author returns to the universe; it's very, very cool.

I'm literally finishing up the third book of that this very moment. I'm liking it more than Cherie Priest's series that started with Boneshaker.
If you want something in the same vein, but for a higher age range, look into Naomi Novik's Temeraire series.

I also read Westerfeld's Uglies series a few days ago. It's ok, not really any better or worse than stuff like Hunger Games or Divergent, but the fourth book is much better.

Went looking around in Barnes and Nobles today and sort of blindly picked up Monster Hunter International and Hyperion today, something I rarely ever do. (Usually I download a book, read it, then buy it. I probably would have just bought one of them, but they had a thing that if you bought any 2 items, you got a free poster map of Westeros, so like a chump I bought something else. (though the map is pretty good and I would have spent the $8 on it alone.) I was going to get Steelheart but that shit was 15 some dollars and looked like a short read.
Now I have to decide which to read first.
MHI seems more like a serialized thing, so I might read Hyperion first.

All of Vonnegut's novels are worth the read. My personal favorites are: Breakfast of Champions, and Cat's Cradle. Also really enjoyed Galapogos despite reading it for HS summer reading lol. Sirens of Titan is really good too, a bit more sci-fi than his later stuff.

semester finally over so just finished Cat's Cradle yesterday, was also amazing. just downloaded a bunch more of his stuff. Gonna do Mother Night next, then in some order Breakfast of Champions, Sirens of Titan, Player Piano, Galapagos.

After that going to do The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls

FYI: Raven's Song Book #2 (Tower Lord) by Anthony Ryan comes out in July. I've pre-ordered it for my Kindle already. If you read Blood Song (Book #1) time to start getting excited :D

A shame the paperback doesn't come out the same time. All the other Dresden Files I own are paperback. Not gonna start buying hardcovers for it now. I'll just have to download it on kindle (hopefully they'll be a torrent of it somewhere) and I'll buy it when it comes out in a few months.

I dont know if its only because you mentioned it, but I've started reading it and the way he writes and what he writes just has me thinking "I've never heard about this dude, but he really does seem like a douche."
Main character being a muscle bound 'im so great, guns are awesome, if you dont think so youre fucking retarded, America fuck yeah!' Is a little hard to get through without me just rolling my eyes.
Ill try and keep reading through it, but I might pick up the second Hyperion book and read through that first. Didnt know that book ended in a too be continued.

Totally agree with this and your comment on Bloodsong. I really love the Riyria duo and am going to go back and read it again next. If you haven't read the Rose and the Thorn and the other prequel (forget the name, about the tower heist they pulled), you really should; they're awesome.

Bloodsong is just freaking amazing. I got my dad to read it and he wants to call his next dog Vaelin. Can't wait for July.

I'm near the end of Elizabeth Bear's Shattered Pillars trilogy. It's ok, but I'm largely finishing to finish at this point. I haven't read a really great fantasy book in a while and have been in a bit of a funk. Bloodsong was the last really great one with the first book of the Act of Caine being somewhere close behind (I couldn't finish the rest of that series though; goes down a totally different path that I hated).

Yeah, I've read the First Law Trilogy and Best Served Cold. He's really great for the genre he typically pursues (I'd call it "fantasy noire" I guess; ultraviolent / sexual) and I largely enjoyed both books, but he seems to be in love with the concept of an anti-hero that is just a buzzkill to me. I won't spoil anything, but don't go into his books expecting a happy ending. I threw the last book of the First Law trilogy across the room when it ended.

So I had trouble getting into Riyria, but I read it right after Lies of Locke Lamora, which I think was a bad idea since they both deal with thieves. Gonna finish up Abercrombie's First Law trilogy before finishing the 2nd Riyria novel in the first book. I like First Law, but I find myself losing steam in the 2nd book, which I think is because a lot of the best characters are just walking for most of it (hi2u fantasy novels).

I have to admit this thread got me back into reading lots of fantasy, which is hard when you also read a shit-ton of ongoing comic series too. Wulfy, I tend to dig your recommends quite a bit. Thanks, hockey-bro.

I'll echo some long old pages of this thread by saying Prince of Nothing is great and Rothfuss is amazing. I really enjoyed Lies of Locke Lamora as well.
Neil Gaiman's the Ocean at the End of the Lane was also a short, but great read, which I couldn't put down once I started.
I've also been a big fan of Guy Gavriel Kay for a long long time. I finally read the two part Sarantine Mosaic earlier this year and it blew me away. Just picked up his sort of, but not really, sequel to Under Heaven, River of Stars and looking forward to it.
