Considering Elantris was Sanderson's first novel (10 years old at that) it is a bit rough around the corners. He only improves as he continues to develop the Cosmere.
I can't wait till he starts tying all his Cosmere books together.
Yah I finished plowing through. End was alright, middle was definitely weak. But yah, first novel, etc. Is there an Elantris sequel? I think I have everything else of his.
I think I remember the Emperor's Soul being the 'unofficial sequel', but the book is 110% unrelated in just about every way. Shares no characters or major plot/story elements iirc, I didn't really pick up on the supposed relation. And as a stand alone book it's really short, and kind of on the meh side.
Book 3 of the Riyria Chronicles prequels by Michael Sullivan just came out. I have not read this one yet, but the Riyria Revelations trilogy and the first two prequels are easily in my top 10 fantasy series as a whole. I originally expected the prequels to be a cheap money grab, but they are arguably better than the original trilogy. Would highly recommend checking out all of Sullivan's Riyria universe if anyone is in a reading lull.
^Awesome, thanks for the heads up. I will pick it up when I finish up the Legends of Muirwood series
Just finished The Things They Carried. Wasn't exactly what I expected, but still tugged at the heart in a lot of places. I really only picked it up because the students I was working with this semester were also reading it and I wanted to know the book (generally a good practice lol). Worth the read, and not too difficult to get through.
Eternal Champion series is pretty great stuff (Swords/Corum Trilogy being my favorite section). I would daresay his writings are the blueprints to Warhammer with how Chaos is represented and how it isn't Good vs. Evil but Law vs. Chaos. Everyone knows there are no good guys in Warhammer.
Currently finishing up a reread of Stainless Steel Rat series and gotta say it's aged very well from my last reading 10-15 years ago.
Wanted to give a mention to Mark Lawrence's books. The Broken Empire series (3 books) has some of the most fun characters in a long time, and the biggest asshole main character you'll like. I really can't think of anyone else to say "Oh, he's kinda like that!", his style seems unique to me. He has a second series, The Red Queen's War, still going on, same universe, but different main character. I suggest you read the blurbs, give the first book a whirl, I think this thread will like this stuff :3

I finished the Broken Empire trilogy as soon as the third came out. It's good, but you really have to be in the mood for the assholish nature of most folks; similar tone and wit as Joe Abercrombie's "fantasy noire." I just hated the ending of BE.
read The Magicians by Lev Grossman in anticipation of the (probably bad) Syfy adaptation in January, pretty good, but also pretty bleak. Picking up the other books at the library later.
If anyone is fancy of leather bound books (ahem, Zet), the Elantris 10th Anniversary Edition is now on sale numbered and signed for the cool price of $100 + shipping.

I'd rather buy a good book.
Decided to jump into the Warhammer books and started with Titanicus after finding it for $2 at a used book store. Liking it so far, though only 200ish pages in so far.
Anyone got any suggestions on where to go from there?
Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames are the first three and likely required reading since everything basically traces back to the events in those books. After those three you can more or less pick and choose books based on fraction, order, cover art, etc as they are more or less standalones with only the large overspan of 40k progressing.
Some of my favorites include but are not limited to: Dark Apostle trilogy, Storm of Iron, Blood Ravens Omnibus, Fulgrim, Thousand Sons, and Gaunt's Ghosts
^ Eisenhorn/Ravenor must be included.
The Night Lords stuff by Aaron Dembski-Bowden are really, really good as well. both of these series stand alone and don't need any other 40k intro/primer.
the horus heresy series is really uneven. everything by abnett and ADB is really good. a lot of the rest is a crapshoot.
Oh snap I forgot about Eisenhorn. Solid Inquisitor fapping material.
