Really wasn't trolling. Maybe I should make a for cereal thread about gun control and why some support it and others don't. I thought the "sane" healthcare debate thread went over pretty well. Busy at work, maybe can get to it later this week.

But to answer your question briefly-

I don't have a problem with people protecting their homes. But the concept of more guns on the street, never knowing who might be carrying a gun, is alarming to me. It doesn't make me feel safer at all. In fact, it makes me feel significantly less safe.

To put it another way- the gun in your house poses no real danger to me, because I'm not going to break in or do anything to trespass.

But the gun in your pocket does put me in danger, in the event that you start shooting it at whoever (including me) you feel might be threatening you.

My buddy used to work at a pawn shop, the bosses all had permits to carry cause they carry lots of jewelry and cash on their way to the bank etc.

Keep a reasonably-sized gun in your house to protect yourself and your family in your home? Sure.

Keep rifles for hunting? Of course.

Well, I have a CCP, though I don't really ever carry.

Mostly I got it because there are so many laws about concealment that's it's really easy to "accidentally" conceal if you are going to the range or something. It also lets you skip the 14 day waiting period on new gun purchase, and you don't have to pay the background check fee for said purchase since they don't have to do one.

It's basically just a convenience, and I learned a lot in the class I was required to take to get it, so it was worth it for that as well.

While I don't carry myself, I don't care if people do and it doesn't bother me. Like you don't understand the thinking behind having a CCP, I don't understand the thinking of being scared of guns.

Have you just never used one or been around them? They're really not that exciting and worth being worrying about.

Now I understand what you're getting at. I won't argue with you over this because I think that's an understandable/natural feeling to have. The only thing is how do you know that someone isn't packing heat illegally? Don't get yourself too paranoid, there aren't that many people that concealed carry to get all worked up about.
And I'll agree with you that this conversation belongs in a more serious thread, this one is pretty stupid.

Chiyio- what you're saying makes sense, I get the convenience factor. Although I'm not going to lie to you, the idea that people can speed up the 14 day waiting period is something that doesn't sit well with me. I feel like it's there for a reason. But I do understand that, at least theoretically, people with the permit are supposed to have already demonstrated they're not dangerous. Then again, people with a permit to drive a car have theoretically demonstrated that they know how to drive. We all know how that sometimes turns out.

To answer your question, no, I have never fired a gun nor even held one. But I have had them pointed at me more times than I'd care to remember, and lost people close to me to both random acts of violence and the pre-meditated variety.

I can see how that might make it look like I'm just opposed to guns because of the shit I've been through. But you could also make the argument that I'm a perfect candidate for being pro-gun, because of the protection thing. I will say that when I was younger, and around guns pretty often, I still never had one or carried one, and was uncomfortable being with friends who did. What I'm getting at is there was no one murder or incident where I was like "dude, fuck guns." I've just kind of always felt that way, not sure why.

aru- I know what you're saying, but I'm not being paranoid lol. I'm not afraid of running into dudes with guns at the country club. I live in downtown DC (although my neighborhood is far, far nicer than some of the sketchy ones we have lived in). I think it's pretty safe to assume that there are plenty of times when I was the ONLY person not carrying a gun illegally, haha.
