Hm. Do professional people care what type of watch men wear? Because, as a girl, I can honestly say I've never been like, "damn his watch is fly" and I don't think I ever would. Some of them do look cool, but they don't make me more interested in a guy if he has one on, nor is it something that I actually take time to look for if they're wearing one.
Why is it considered the most important accessory?? I'd just get an iphone, looks cooler than a watch and does more stuff for less money.

1) Status symbol.
2) Appreciate the incredible craftmanship that went into them.

Seriously, Lbelle it's like you seeing someone using a lolPrada or lolGucci handbag....vs someone using an Hermes Birkin notilus crocodile. It's in a different league.
Same goes for watches.
The first thing I notice about a person is their watch. I'm a watch freak, especially super-luxury ones like Lange &Sohne, Roger Dubuis, Glashutte, Franck Muller, Audemars, etc...(and i'm not talking Rolex). Watch can tell a lot about one's status.

I myself uses a GMT master2 for daily use ie work, and when I'm to impress people, my Franck Muller Conquistador is taken out from the box.

As for the appreciation of watches reason I stated above, the amount of complicated craftmenship that goes into these "tourbulion" watches, micro-mechanical counter and power reserve indicators to the striking-mechanism and movement etc... are freaking incredible!

whats with the trend of the super huge fucking watches? Not a fan. I don't want to show off and look like I'm TRYING to show off. Kinda douchey in my book. I have a nice silver swiss army with a dark blue face/metal band. I like it but I just like wearing a watch. It's the only jewelry I wear (well, aside from wedding band now). No earrings or necklaces etc.

You do- to an extent get what you pay for though. Obviously a $700+ is just spending so you can tell people you have a crazy expensive watch. But if you get a cheapo 40 job from JC Penny odds are good you'll have to replace often. If you wear it regularly you'll drop it/bang it against things etc. Shit happens. If you're the type who wants to get a new one often then this isn't a bad way to go.

I had a guy I worked with who had this fucking watch that had a cover that popped open- sort of like a pocketwatch worn on the wrist. He'd sit there all fucking day pop *sproing* open swing *snap* close. Sproing snap. Sproing snap. Sproing snap. Don't get that. I'll find you and kill you.

Metal band = casual.

If you wear suits a lot, a more formal watch has a leather strap and is smaller - it's supposed to be discreet and not catch on your shirt cuff or jacket cuff when it's on your wrist.

You really aren't supposed to wear a watch the size of a manhole cover for work/formal occasions, but that's more of a classical style thing, rules are made to be broken, etc.

Most women won't notice your watch. Most men won't notice your watch. Some will, just get one you like that you can live with. Considering everyone is wearing clunky ones with steel metal bands, why not go with a leather strap?

If the hands were pixelated that watch would be God tier.

As far as a good quality watch; I love my Seiko. My step dad bought it for me and has had a similar model for well over a decade with no problems.

my leather straps would wear out and have to be replaced which sucked because I could never find quite the right one. Metal is more durable, which is why I made the switch. If I had disposable cash, though, I'd probably have 3- brown leather, black leather, silver metal.

All comes down to how people like to spend (or waste) their money. You can actually see nice clothes, it rare for someone to actually look at your watch or care enough.

Check out some Diesel watches. They have many nice ones within your budget with both metal and leather bands.

Personally, i see a metal banded watch as more of a dress watch to wear on certain occassions and a leather banded watch as an everyday type of watch.

Also, stay away from diamonds and such because unless it cost you $5,000+ and you are a rapper and/or a Pro Athlete it just doesn't work.

There is overspending on certain items just because you have the ability to do so. I'm no different, I tend to spend more on a computer, or MID, because I have the ability to afford and purchase it.
