he said nothing about someone's opinion not mattering. he just said that everyone has their "thing" and to sit there and say "blowing money on a $200 watch is dumb" while you're about to go blow $200 on a purse, fancy clothes, video games, computer parts and so on is hypocritical. Urging folks to have a little perspective isn't such a crazy thing is it? I still don't even see what your criticism is about.

Was cheapo, I like how it looks, it gets noticed and commented on - not a bad situation

Diesel has some nice watches (and some not-so-nice watches).

I don't even know what half those dials are keeping track of haha.

To sort of contribute to the thread: I have an old Hamilton watch made out of some combination of stainless steel and silver. Found it when I was helping clean out my grandparents' house and don't really wear it unless I'm dressing nice for something. No idea of its worth, but I doubt it's valuable.

Hamilton's can range from a few hundred, to quite a few thousand.

They're just fakes XD That's why the watch was cheap, only the main dial showing time is real.

Gonna have to agree that a watch is one of the last things you should consider spending a lot of money on. How you dress can certainly say a lot although the watch is such a minor part of it, nobody is going to ever place that much emphasis on it even if you do have a good watch. I'm tempted to say that half the people who seem to care so much about it are just fashion victims.

watches are actually pretty damn good investments. my omega seamaster(incidentally the one worn by Bond in Goldeneye) has doubled its price since I got it.

people actually do notice watches, even though to the untrained eye, everything may look similar(as per lbelle's example). just like suits, if you don't know what kind of material and what cutting/fit is good, a $5000 ermenegildo zegna suit can look the same as a $99 one from men's wearhouse. likewise with wines; a 1982 chateau lafite will probably taste no different than a 2007 bottle from a napa vineyard.

I'm with wop on his view of watches. high end watches are status symbol. they're one of the first things people look out for. the number of complications in a watch are just amazing works of art. I myself have a number of watches, and my 'hi thar i wanna impress u' watch is a jaeger le coultre duometre.

back to the OP... even for the $200 range, some watches can still get quite dressy. Try Kenneth Cole

metal band, not digital, under $200.

You can get some really nice watches for under $200.

I was recently searching for a men's dress watch and came across an Accutron two-tone diamond watch for $160 that normally retails for around $1000.

The trick is that there are quite a few a websites that offer a watch 'deal of the day' where they have a specific watch on an amazing sale for a period of 24 hours.

Here are a few of the deal a day watch sites:
    http://watch.1saleaday.com/
    http://www.ewatches.com/cust/dailydealsteal.as
    http://www.froobi.com/category/watch-of-the-day
    http://www.jomadeals.com/
    http://www.worldofwatches.com/cust/dailydealsteal.asp
    http://www.watches.yugster.com/
    http://www.thewatchery.com/

Also, I happen to prefer thin watches. This makes Skagen one of my favorite brands. For a mid-priced watch like this you are much better off buying it on amazon.com or eBay instead of a retail store.

Reason I specified metal band is plastic feels bleh on my wrist, and leather/cloth, I feel dirty with sweat soaking into it.

And $200 is about double what I spent for my last Fossil around 10 years ago, so figured 200 was a good number.

What I'm looking for... meh, I can find something normal easy, wanted to see if someone had seen anything crazy lately.

My suit and tie watch is my grandfather's rolex presidential, but my day to day watch is a Citizen EcoDrive SkyHawk

I travel quite a bit so having military time/UTC/two other cities and it set itself automatically via radiowaves is advantageous, was only $850

This is funny because i had just gotten into this arguement with someone i work with. I have a relatively normal, clean looking fossil watch that was given to me as a gift and i consider it my "good" watch. I only wear it if I dress up or w/e and i happened to wear into work before i changed he saw it, said hey nice looking watch what kind is it...Showed it to him he immediately scoffed at it, saying oh nvm its a shitty one. Now my question is, does it have to be some multi-hundo dollar watch to be considered a nice watch? He says hes a watch collector (w/e lol) and said his everyday wearing watch is a 300ish dollar one. I mean, a clean looking watch is clean regardless right? Does it really matter if its 100 or 600?

That's precisely what I mean by fashion victims. They place value on the wrong things and don't understand why. Those who dress in what they like and make it look tasteful are far more impressive then those who feel the need to spend thousands of dollars on frivolty.

Don't get me wrong though, if you really like watches that much it's not a big deal. You should spend money on things that you like. My friend dropped $2000 on some bike parts just recently (He's not an athelete so that's quite a bit of money for a bicycle.) He rarely rides it too, he's just always enjoyed bikes so it makes sense.
