Registered Sex Offenders

A good friend of mine from high school is on the list.

He was dating this girl in HS, he was 17 when they started dating and she was 16. He turned 18, and soon after her mom found out they were sexually active and she got mad at him over it.

She called the police and pressed charges. He fought the charges, lost and ended up having to register as a sex offender. The sad part is is that we all have real jobs now and hes delivering pizzas.

While were able to read the degree and reason a person is on such a list is irrelevant at times but the fact of the matter is their lives are basically fucked over because of it. Its a death sentence of sorts in my opinion. My friend does not deserve to be on the same list as an actual child molester.

His is a case where justice was NOT served, however I'm of the opinion that we should rehabilitate people when possible instead of just punishing them. I'm a happy, snappy liberal though so you know how that goes.

I was pretty close to being on the list. I was 16 and she was 15. Her mom freaked and called the police. I won though, no list for me.

I never said I think that this man's life should not be fixed. If he is in the clear, then he should be cleared. The OP said that the damage had already been done. It's a sad story, but not enough for me to be 100% against what the sex registration tries to accomplish.

I liked what Archibaldcrane had to say about the list though.. it creates hysteria. I think a website that posts all locations of every sex offender is a huge breach of privacy. However, I do think that that information should be public to the community... it's kind of a difficult situation. One I do not have the solution for, and do not pretend to have. For the record, I'm not arguing for or against it-- I'm not saying that "since 98% of sex registrations are truly pieces of shit, it's worth it if 2% good people fall through the cracks."

It's deplorable that that happens, but what's the solution? I'm open to discussion for sure.

I asked this before, but do people think that this list solves the problem of sexual violence somehow? Do people think it prevents repeat offenders?

The state punished an innocent man based on a lie. And who cares if the daughter wanted to fuck? She was at that age. Stop living in a carebear world and open your eyes, when a human's body gets the urge for sex, that shit is what happens.

And a lot of unanswered questions. One being, what is the reasoning behind posting the location of sex offenders? If all it does is create social blacklists and hysteria, I am against it. However, at the same time I think people need to be aware of those who are sexual offenders. No, I don't necessarily think statutory rape laws are always sexual defenders. But statutory rape statutes protects young people from being taken advantage of sexually.

As to your last questions, I asked something similar earlier in the thread.. What I want to know is the reasoning behind the website address tracking? (To discourage repeat offenders or to hang a sign around someone's neck forever) And is it reaching those goals?

I don't care that the girl wanted to fuck, I'm not against that and that isn't event the issue. The point at issue is why was this man's life ruined? The law? Yes. The lie? Yes. In my eyes, this does not have me jumping to attack the law. I am still undecided what I think about sexual registration websites.. if they are used like the OP said earlier in the page, "PEACE TO THAT GUYS JOB." I am against it. That is the hysteria that the webpage creates, and that is deplorable.

As for the brother and the lying daughter-in-law, that is an extreme example. Primarily to challenge the usefulness and purposefulness of the law, which it does for sure--I just don't necessarily think the man's life was ruined wholly because of the law.

There certainly should be a list to some degree, but after reading just a little bit about what gets you on the current list and how it affects people's lives afterwards, it's easy to see how it's almost a total farce. Those 'rare cases' where someone probably shouldn't be on the list are far too common.

Do we know that they are common? Look at how many dots show up in a 50 mile radius. How many are minor? We don't really have a means to know... and that's a problem I think.

Decided to look at my old neighborhood. One of my friends from when I was 9 years old is on the list for the following.

He had learning problems and a really fucked up childhood. Even at the age of 9 I knew he would have trouble later in life. Seeing it makes me sad.
