Mini-Review

So currently I have about 4-5 hours under my belt in TERA, and I have to say it's pretty fun.

I'm currently playing a Castanic Archer, and I hit level 10/11 a few moments ago. I have to say, the world is definitely pretty, the animations are smooth and fluid, and the gameplay is sound.

The gameplay itself, or so it seems is a series of quest hubs, with normal kill x and gather y stuff. I found the battle system so much fun that I didn't mind grinding. Though since it seems to take a world of warcraft approach to questing, I didn't find myself as addicted as I thought I would be. I haven't run a real instance yet, but I'm assuming it'll be similar to WoW.

I do have to give TERA props for reminding me of Jehuty in Zone of the Enders because of one of the archer skills.

Playing archer is really like playing a third person shooter with a very limited sticky targeting, there's enough leniency to help you hit the enemy, but it's strict enough that you have to be really close to actually aiming at the enemies.

All in all I wasn't really blown away, but I definitely feel satisfied. I think they could do a few more things to make the world feel a bit more alive, especially with npcs. I didn't really care for the layout of the starter area, I hated having to run all the way back to the beginning on the area to get my Archer skills. I haven't had a chance to play around in other areas yet, so it's totally possible that its just the starter area.

Anyways I'm definitely interested enough to keep playing. I can't wait till NA open beta starts so I can start getting more into the story.

There is always a village or something in the area that usually sells skills, you can either buy or get scrolls that teleport you there while you quest, and the blue Elin NPC in each of those cities teleports you to any quest hub for a fee. Starting area is not even that much running come on lol.

I saw a clip of the character creation. It lets you choose a name before customizing your character?

Yeah, it allows you to check availability before you confirm anything.

Finally a game that does this. A big A+ for the makers to do this. Tired of spending hours customizing a character to match a name only to end up with the name being taken already, probably when you're fucking around with selections.

Agreed. Also, the way it currently stands, you can make 8 characters per server, go cross servers, make another 8 characters, repeat in another sever, etc, if you ever wanna fuck around with friends, or fuck with CC after you made a bunch of characters already.
