I don't mind open world PvP if the penalty for dying isn't too bad. In Aion for example, dying at a high rank was such a huge fuck you that you rarely saw anyone from the opposing faction unless they had just spent all their points and consequently been demoted. However, I actually liked how L2 dealt with gankers a lot, which was that killing someone who didn't fight back got you flagged with a red name, and if you died you had a huge chance of dropping items.
