Yeah, but the hero, like all android handsets suffers from a weaker 528 MHz CPU. The HD2 has the 1GHz snapdragon processor, bloody fast.

Comparison vidoe of an OpenGL stress test running on the HD2 and the Touch HD (which has the same 528 MHz processor as the Hero):

YouTube - HTC HD2 vs. HTC Touch HD: OpenGLS Test

The difference is incredible, the speed and smoothness while browsing/zooming and swapping apps is awesome.

The GSM phones and networks do use SIM cards, but without unlocking -- both T-Mobile and AT&T have different policies on letting you do this, but I think T-Mobile is more liberal in allowing you to -- the SIM of a different provider won't ordinarily work in a phone purchased from the other provider.

tl;dr: you buy phones from networks locked to that network in the US. This locking can be removed. If that's the angle you were pursuing in your comment, then I misinterpreted.
Ok I see. Phones can be locked to a certain provider over here too, but practically *every* phone is possible to buy without it being locked to a specific provider. It usually costs a bit more though, becuase the service providers like to subsidize the phones when they're locked to them.

I think the only exception to this is the iPhone, which caused a shitstorm when it was released . That phone is now available from two service providers though, but cannot be bought unlocked.

Personally, I always get unlocked phones because I'll save money on it in the long run, because I can use my already existing contract which is much cheaper than anything else for my usage pattern.
