The excuse that I tell people is that I'm double majoring and minoring in an engineering field (which is partly the reason why it'll take longer, but yeah).
I can defend people having to take classes such as math and science, even if they aren't in a field remotely related to it, but I can't defend requiring liberal arts classes such as art, cultural diversity (my school requires at least 3 credits here), and other humanties. History and English are debatable, though by judging my friends English skills on Facebook, even the college ones, more classes should be required.
