To everyone: sure it's an off-year election and less people give a damn, but that doesn't mean the results don't matter. I'll explain below.

Egon: since you want to make a big deal about it let's do so. Repubs won the governors seat Virginia because the Dem candidate was TERRIBLE and the Repub actually ran a good campaign that focused on actual issues that matter instead of the usual BOO HISS FEAR FAGS LIBRULS ABORTION, and never mind that VA-Gov traditionally swings opposite the party holding the Presidency. Corzine losing is a minor upset, and one that we saw coming because he's been a fuckin' lousy governor. So congrats to McDonnell and Christie, and here's hoping they serve their states well.

These gubenatorial races say more about the conditions in the states they took place in rather than whether people approve of Obama or not. In fact, approval for Obama in both NJ and VA is still well over 55%. However, the NY-23 contest says more about national politics than any other election that was held this year, and the result is that people are STILL sick of the ultra-conservative bullshit. And that includes the moderate Republican candidates like Scozzofaza who've found that their national party has abandoned them in favor of reactionary radicals.

Now on to subjects of more interest and less fire - the NYC Mayor's race. Bloomberg spent a fuckton of money and was ahead big time in the polls, and his opponent barely spent anything, yet Bloomberg's win was only 4 points? I think that speaks a lot about how people felt regarding his push to remove the term limits. I'm not gonna say he's been bad or good.. he's done the job. I do think that he won't try to run again though, and if he does he'll get beaten.

Actually it is significant. It means that the more radical side of the Republican party (Palin) may cause them some more trouble in the future. As for the rest of the elections, you can pretty much place most of the blame on the economy. It doesn't matter how many times the liberals on this board point at the stock market and scream GO TEAM OBAMA, if the "real economy", the job market, doesn't get better to any significant degree by 2010, the Democrats may be in serious trouble.

For the time being, all signs point to a shittyness for real Americans (as in, not bankers) in 2010, and perhaps trouble as big as the financial crisis. But to be honest, at this point i don't give two shits about the Democrats and i am kind of hoping they lose big in 2010 and 2012, just so i can see what the Republicans do to the country. I am wanting a train wreck, because as far as i'm concerned, only a train wreck is going to change anything in DC.

Gubenatorial elections are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Some of the bigger blue states have Republican Governor's (California, Minnesota, etc) and vice versa for the red states (Oklahoma, West Virginia, etc).

The fact that a heavily Conservative district elected a Dem for the first time in 120+ years is far more telling. It shows people don't want the right wing nuts running anything and that the Republicans should stop trying to force the moderates out if they want to survive.

Actually, that will only make matters worse for the US. If you want to know in how much trouble the US is, in terms of military, go see Andrew Bacevich. More wars and military spending from the US, would only make the trainwreck, more trainwreck.

it pisses me off so bad. we went to the courts, they said go to the legislature. we went to the fucking legislature, they said go to the people. has nobody heard of the term "tyranny of the majority?" for fuck's sake, you cannot let huge social issues that impact people on such a vital level be decided by a simple fucking majority vote. and what gets me even worse is their defense, "but the people should decide the laws! the people have the right to have their voice heard! if you don't let them speak, you're raping democracy!"

sounds so beautiful and patriotic on the surface. and it's great if you're in the majority. but do we really want to live in a country where mob rule is law? throughout history, minorities have needed the legislature and the courts to defend them from the prejudice and bigotry of the majorities. this is no different. what if we lived in a world where Christians were the minority? would it be right for them to be disallowed to practice their own religion just because the majority voted against them?

oh well. history has proven that social issues almost always move forward regardless of how long it takes to escape the grip of conservative fear. this is only a matter of when, not if. but it still feels disheartening.
