Something that's worth mentioning is that it's a really shitty time to be an incumbent governor in either party. Approval ratings for sitting governors are in the tank, and Corzine was probably worse off than your generic Democratic governor due to the crap he has pulled over the past few years. I don't think Christie is necessarily much better, but he was able to convince the voters to give him a shot and see. That's not necessarily a bad thing for New Jersey, but it is still a small hit for the Democratic party.

Along with the tendency of Virginia voters to vote against the recent election as mentioned above, Deeds just didn't run a very good campaign. McDonnell did. There's not much more to say about it, but given the lack of an incumbent on the ticket, this race probably reflected local political conditions and the candidates themselves more than anything on the national scene.

NY-23 was a clusterfuck from start to finish. Clusterfuck clusterfuck clusterfuck. I don't think that the deciding factor was anything that the Democratic candidate did or anything that Obama or Biden did, it was all about the GOP fucking it up for themselves. The lesson seems to be that as the national party, you can't just brow-beat your supporters into voting for the "most conservative" candidate on that credential alone.
