I wonder why it is religious people think that life must be meaningless without God. I wonder if that's the only reason they really believe? Having it drilled into their heads that being an atheist = being miserable...life is painful with or without religion, and then religion demands that you give up joy and pleasure as well to make sure you can have it when you die instead.

Life IS painful. Christianity is not trying to drill that into anyone's head or say that you must be miserable, but christianity recognizes that life is hard. Christianity presents a way for people to live their lives such that they can withstand the hard parts and find happiness. If someone finds christianity telling them to give up something that makes them happy, then either "what they think makes them happy" does not make them genuinly happy (another post would offer more explanation) or there is a misunderstanding either in what you think christianity is telling you or the "thing telling" you is mistaken in its own belief/understanding.

I guess you can say I'm a new-age christian. I don't believe in gay segregation, and I don't believe in a lot of things the bible says (I turned away from Catholicism because of saints and the old scriptures). In terms of things I don't partake? I guess sex now, which is about the only thing I miss (lol). My current gf is waiting til after marriage, which I respect and honor her decision. It sucks, but... it's something I got to get over. I don't do drugs and I hardly drink, so just about everything else I can enjoy. ;o Also I'm not some evangelist or anything, I just believe in God and if you don't then that's cool.
