Back in Jan. 2007, a mother died trying to win a Wii at a radio contest. Whoever could drink the most water without having to pee would win, she died of water intoxication. Well, the family sued the radio station and won.

Yesterday, a California jury finally ruled on the wrongful death suit filed by the victim's family back in 2007. Entercom Sacramento LLC, subsidiary of Philadelphia-based Entercom Communications Corp., must pay Strange's family $16.5 million after being found liable for the actions of its employees at KDND-FM.

I think they deserved to be sued for this. Not everyone are freaking doctor, and water poisoning isn't common knowledge.

People warned the radio station, but they didn't cancel it or warn the contestant, so it's mostly their fault.

Glad to see that they did win, this was such a sad story.

It just upsets me at the ignorance of some people. When you have medical professionals calling the radio station saying "You shouldn't be doing this, it's dangerous, someone can die." and you still continue, well, what can you say. =/

I was actually listening to this show as it was happening on my commute to work that morning. Indeed, there were several callers that warned about water intoxication, including a registered nurse among them. The DJs were mostly nonchalant about it on the air, saying that they had someone trained , and that they knew about the danger of water intoxication, but didn't think the amount of water they were giving to the contestants would be dangerous. They not only made contestants drink a ton of water and hold it, they made the contestants continue to drink more every fifteen minutes to stay in the contest. I was actually listening to the girl complain about how much she felt like shit just before the other final contestant gave in.

The next day, when the news came out that the woman died, Entercom shut down the website of the DJs hosting this particular show, leaving a blank white page with only Entercom's phone number on it. The DJs and the producers were all also fired immediately.

Glad the family finally gets some peace of mind with all this.

Like with a lot of radio show promotions, it sounds like this one got out of hand. The drinking additional water thing was probably an off-the-cuff addition in the middle of the contest when people weren't dropping out fast enough for the DJs and Producers to manage the show in a timely fashion.

It was just negligence, but these sorts of contests aren't anything new. Another favorite that used to exist downtown near where I live was "nickel beer" that started at 5PM and continued until someone went to the bathroom. Come to think of it, I think that promotion stopped around the time that this story first broke.

Other sites report that they played recordings of the DJs laughing at the contestants getting sick to the jury.

Yea, my understanding was the DJ's on air were laughing and bragging saying they all signed waivers so there was nothing they could do to them.
