Any recommendations for a heart rate monitor watch?

Also, I know this was answered, but what are some good protein products? Shakes, bars, whatever.

And I need some recommendations for resistance bands for when I'm traveling.

    Thanks, everyone.

Not sure about heart rate monitor, I'm sure someone else knows.

Protein: Protein powder. I know most guys here love their OptimumNutrition. For already-made protein shakes, I usually get Muscle Milk if I'm on the go. For protein bars, I like Think Thin, Clif Builders, and... yeah. Usually those. BEST protein things though? Eggs, meat, etc.

Do you need resistance bands when you travel? Can get a pretty good workout with just your body with no additional equipment. If you need bands though, I'm sure someone else will have info on that--I sure don't. SORRY!

you can buy cheapo bands at target for like 10 bucks, in the sporting goods section

And yeah, remember that supplements are called supplements for a reason. Ideally most of your protein (or any nutrient for that matter) should be coming from your diet. Personally, I try to keep below 3 or 4 protein shakes per day.

ON protein is pretty great though. Unless you have lots of money to burn go with just plain ON Gold, IMO besides the taste the Platinum is a waste of money (unless you have stomach upset from whey, in which case protein isolates like that will probably be a lot easier on your stomach)

@Atreides -- I'm sure you can eat it like rice (as you've said), but can also make it into pilaf or substitute it in a tabbouleh recipe, for instance. I've wanted to try amaranth grain/flour for awhile but haven't gotten the guts to buy it. hahah. Should try amaranth pancakes! :D
Well I bought some amaranth today at whole foods in the bulk section, $2.99 per lb isn't so terrible but it let me buy a small quantity so I could experiment with cooking it. I took 1/2 cup and boiled with 1 cup water, and about 1/2 tsp of olive oil, just like I'd cook rice. (Trader Joes doesn't even sell it, so I assume this is the cheapest you can actually get unless you have an Aztec grocery in your town lol)

It's important to note that they're little tiny pellets that are actually seeds, not true "grain" despite the name, so when you cook them they don't get fluffy like rice. Rather, they exude a starch and become sticky, and the consistency is VERY similar to grits. In fact, with some turkey bacon and a fried egg, some amaranth grits with a little olive oil/butter would be a great breakfast. The taste is kinda earthy/nutty, hard to explain, they weren't great but they weren't terrible.

Supposedly you can "pop" the seeds like popcorn in a very hot wok. This puffs up the seeds and creates a softer consistency. That will probably be my next attempt, with a tiny bit of peanut oil I think. I'm wondering if you can toast them for the same effect but I doubt it.

    Personally dislike using protein bars.
Used them when I was starting out but it usually has too much sugar, sugar alcohols, not even good fats, and costs WAY too much for a decent one.

WPI + all natural peanut butter works wonders, or WPI + oatmeal + olive oil.
It's about knowing what goes into your system.

You might be cutting or on offseason diet, which makes nutrition a priority.
Might find that you're subseptible to bloat on certain carbs, etc; looking fat when it's only water you're holding because of the carb source.

Polar makes great HRM systems. They can be somewhat expensive, but they last FOREVER and can take a huge beating.

I'll look into the polar ones. The ones that I liked for the design were the Timex Ironman ones. I want to be able to wear it constantly for style as well as functionality.
