There may has some misunderstanding. Many people who going to workout/weightlifting may has they different goal. Like get in tone, or have better shape, or getting into power lifting and etc.
Therefore, this doesn't mean that, like example a person who unable to squat 1.5x should feel ashame of himself. For like if you just like to get toning through weightlifting, you don't even need to bench like the average as in the chart. Usually the professional trainer will just tell you do lower weight for more reps. If you really want to get into serious and really very very serious body building, then yes, you definitely need to bench so much.
And there is some other factor too, like some Bgers in the post, including me may have some past injury in hamstring, shoulder and etc. Forcing ourselves to get to the "average" weight for lifting is a big no no and bad idea, in honestly. So, setting a goal by yourself, once achieve the goal, then decide what should you proceed. will be a better way imo.
Workout and the time for eating looks fine for me. What you can try to do is cut the lunch by little, while you may want to increase the small meal alittle if you feels you are losing energy/starving too much. For my experience, first I cut my lunch and dinner (both of them fairly large meal) to about 60%, then begin to adjust the portion by either increasing or reducing them, until I don't feel starving and losing energy when I go to workout.I don't eat 5-6hours before I sleep. Been doing 30min elliptical(400ish cals) followed by my muscle group work out then finished with a 30min walk on the treadmill(200ish cals)
I would say if you're unable to lose weight you're probably eating a lot more calories than you realize, mostly with carbs. If it was me, I'd have half as much rice and half as many plantains, just so I didn't have to give up either.
By plantains, do you mean your wife makes tostones? I love tostones so fucking much, but being fried twice isn't that great for you lol. You can actually grill them and they still get a little crispy on the outside, but it's not the same.
Jesus Christ, I want some so bad now ><; FFUUUUUUUUU
and BP, I would just cut portions from your meals, chances are - like others have said - you are just eating more calories than you think. Your workout looks solid, you should be losing. Keep on going, cut some cals, and profit :D
Eat before you sleep, protein and fats, 6hrs+8hrs sleep is a lot of time without sustenance
Don't do cardio before you work out, all that does is burn off the carbs in your belly. Ultimately leaving you with less energy for your workout, something that burns more calories anyway. And it could cause the body to break down your muscle for energy.
Well I'm 6'2 294 at the moment, started fixing my eating habits and working out like 2.5 months ago. Started @312 been losing 2-3lb a week on the weeks I don't slack(2 weeks I've slacked and 4th July weekend)
Guilty of tostones they too good to pass up sometimes but most plantains I eat is in form of Mangu(http://www.dominican-foods.com/plantain-recipe.html). I've made a lot of progress from 3 big meals + random snacking & no gym/physical activity to my current 1big/2small/2snacks + exercise. My goal right now is to get to 200-220 without losing muscle. A beginner routine for weight lost would be pretty good to have right now. Taking small steps to a better lifestyle is my main concern.
All that the people that got offended had to say was that their goals are not in powerlifting and therefore, it doesn't apply to them. Plus people are putting words in my mouth as if I'm telling people they don't belong in my gym if they aren't an advanced/elite powerlifter. It's the people that show a lack of weight room etiquette that bother me. These are things such as people that take up 5 areas for 2 hours without letting anyone work in, or the people that do curls in the squat rack, or the people that block the dumbbell rack when you are trying to put back some heavy DBs, or the people that come in for 1 month (January) and tell everyone else how things are supposed to be in the gym.
I also believe back when I had a lifting journal, I did make comments about the respect I had for some larger people that were coming in there near closing time to improve themselves rather than the many people that haven't exercised in 30 years and blame everything on age or genetics.
@Bigpapi:
There is actually nothing wrong with eating before you sleep...as long as it's not disrupting your sleep patterns. Having an empty stomach for 6 hours on top of how many hours you sleep may make your body sad--like meat said. I do agree with everyone else that perhaps you are underestimating how much you are eating, as rice and stuff really does add on calories (and carbs).
I also have to reiterate what meat said about your cardio before your lifting. 5-10 minute warm-up is ok, but at the length you're doing before you lift, it will tire your body out and won't really be burning the fat you want. Also, perhaps try more interval training and/or walking.
I understand what you're going for is an overall change in your habits and lifestyle, which is good. So congrats on your current loss but I do hope you keep what everyone has said in mind to help you continue it.
@Ryany:
I don't think it's fair to say "all that the people who got offended had to say was that their goals are not in powerlifting". First, coming into this thread, I don't know how anyone would assume people here are talking about serious powerlifting and/or are looking to become a bodybuilder. So, in a sense, it's almost egotistical to come in and seemingly blindly say that "if you can't hit X amount for your weight class, then I'm not impressed". I don't think people in here are offended that you may have inadvertently called them novices or whatever, but rather...that you had the audacity to act like you are able to pass judgement on others. Obviously, this is me speaking--and not speaking on anyone else's behalf.
This thread is meant to lend support for everyone... and while I'm sick of all the bicep pictures (needs more nudes plz) and what not, people have earned their right to show their progress.
Perhaps people would have been more receptive if you said something akin to what you just said now (or was that just to safeface?).
Anyway--back to fitness we go!
Nobody likes it. Like in my school, except two or three chinese guy that coming to workout at least 3 days a week. Some fxxking chinese (althought i'm chinese too, but I would like to say so) that will occupy at least flat bench, military press and sit up area for like hrs. But yet when they done using it, they never putting all the plates back to its original positions.
Ok, abs show time. :DThis thread is meant to lend support for everyone... and while I'm sick of all the bicep pictures (needs more nudes plz) and what not, people have earned their right to show their progress.
I'm tracking the change of my abs right now, when i gets to the first check point of goal, going to shows the progression pics.
rofl, not exactly as if the thread has suddenly been filed with biceps shots. guys gotta chill with the haterade, not as if we are all strangers and are like "fuck yea im awesome you guys are weak and ants compared to me!"

I'm going out the country for 2 months will be gone aug&sep going to dominican republic where I'm going to be a lot more active. While im there I plan on finding some sort of a gym and I plan on doing plenty of cardio and being very active.
@Zoo - maybe if you lose the pants and zoom out a bit. Then you get the idea.
Just kidding... I think seeing you may scar me for life.
Is Mangu the same as mafungo? Anyway if you're eating loads of plantains AND rice you probably could stand to cut down on both, it'd be an easy way to get rid of calories. You get plenty of carbs from beans too.
most "easy" methods have their own problems/inaccuracies. You can look up how the army determines it via neck/waist size and formulas, that actually tends to be the most accurate. The scales with built in meters (those metal plates) are wildly inaccurate, but you can use them to semi-gauge progress over time. Skinfold calipers work well enough, but they're also inaccurate.
Unfortunately the only "reliable" methods of measuring will cost you some money, xray absorption/immersion tank testing has to be done at a hospital or a specialized sports mediciney type place, so you probably don't need it unless you're a professional athlete.
If anyone ever tells you they have 3-7% body fat you should probably not believe them, at least without pictures. They're most likely basing that on what their bathroom scale told them, when those methods can be anywhere upwards of 5-10% off. With enough practice the easiest way to determine body fat % is to eyeball it, actually.
sounds good. I usually just go for puerto rican food so I'm not that familiar with it.
Semi-related but I fucking love South American food so much. My ex-stepmom was from Uruguay so she'd make some ridiculous food, chorizo, chimichurri from scratch, and these pastries with dulce de leche and coconut. We'd always have these insane barbeques with just massive quanitities of meat lol.
now I think I'm gonna have to go for brazilian BBQ when I start to bulk again lol
Don't remember if I had asked this before but I'm asking again if I did..
I had to stop P90X due to heart issues and starving myself till my heart gave out on me, but now that I'm eating a lot better (maybe too good) I'm going to start doing P90X again since it's the only way I can motivate myself to exercise.
I know it takes time to get through the entire hour or so workouts but what about plyometrics? Is it normal for me to only finish like 20-30 minutes of it without feeling like I'm going to puke and have to stop? I tried to take a 5 minute break and get back into it but I just couldn't do it.. that feeling of needing to puke came right back. Is 20-30 minutes decent for my first time doing it in six months? :-/
I feel like maybe I should just do kenpo-x or cardio-x in place of plyo until I get into the groove of things.
Also, this shit sucks when all I've done for six months is sit on my ass and play video games.
No. Cardio. Strength. At. AAAALL.
People think that just because I'm 140 pounds that I'm healthy. Bitches aint seen me naked! Aint pretty..
