It depends what your goal is. Jogging is a good cardiovascular exercise, just like riding a stationary bike. It'll build your endurance so you don't get winded after brief exercise (like climbing a few flights of stairs).

There is a difference between getting huge and getting strong. Bruce Lee was 138lbs.

An hour sucks. Idk, 3 miles was usually pretty solid to me. Maybe toss in a longer run every now and then. Gotta have music and/or someone to run with. You learn to zone out.

Really depends on your goals. Jogging/running is meh, unless you are training for a marathon? Sprints/HIIT is shorter and more fun! I jog for 2-4 minutes maximum for warmups when I do sprints/HIIT...that's about it. I can't even hold my attention span for 2-4 minutes! I'm already antsy at 30 seconds.

As for helping build endurance for walking flights of stairs? Nah. I don't know about you but even when I was jogging/running a lot, flights of stairs killed me. It's a whole different thing.

Also, there are better cardio workouts: hiking/walking in general, bike, swimming, rock climbing! I'm actually going to try rock climbing tomorrow. Can't wait!

Bottom line: If you don't enjoy jogging/running, don't push yourself. There's really no point in doing it unless you're training for a marathon/triathlon/etc or you really enjoy it. You can find other more enjoyable activities that'll keep you in shape and help with your cardio.

edit: Also, I enjoy preserving as much muscle as I can so I don't jog/run or get my heart rate up for a long period of time.

Oye, lets not dive into the "why should you run" topic again.

Just telling him that there's the option of doing something other than running to stay fit. That's all I'm saying.

Since I've been working out every day since I signed up(Only 12 days, I know), I feel like my endurance is a lot better than it used to be. (Fat kids who dont move get winded super easily, so yeah I'm shocked.)

Lost 12 pounds so far, (meh), but I was considering swimming rather than doing my treadmill stuff, thoughts? Easier on my feet since zero impact, etc.

I am going to set up a weight rotation next week, figured I should wait until I have a bit more endurance before I went on to doing both.

But yeah, thoughts on swimming? Was going to work my way up to doing some form of circuit training for better Cardio once I am able to handle it.

Also, when I start lifting, any recommendations in terms of protein shakes etc?

    Thanks.

Swimming is a fantastic workout, burns a ton of calories. The one thing that always sent my blood sugar (Diabetic) plummeting more than anything else was swimming, I always had to be careful. And its basically no impact like you said, definitely a nice alternative and way to mix things up and save your legs. Treadmill kills my legs, cant get any better than swimming for low-impact cardio.

Optimum Nutrition is pretty heavily plugged here for whey, its pretty much one of/the best brands overall.

And why the "meh" @ 12 lbs lost? Thats great man, nice work.

    Edit: lol@Moss, great minds etc.

I don't have anything to back this up but as far as I know swimming is about as good as it gets cardio wise, burns a ton of calories.

As for protein shakes, Optimum Nutrition is a great brand. I drink their double chocolate whey shakes and chocolate supreme casein, both taste very good.

    edit: beaten!

Cardio is cardio, it's all about the elevated heart-rate, any shit does that. What makes swimming is top tier is that it's fun or at the very least semi fun. and that's irreplaceable when it comes to cardio.

    Top tier
    swimming
    speed\heavy bag
    combat training\martial arts

As for shakes, casein might be a bit grainy for a noob, try bsn's synta 6 it's easily the best powder out there. one thing u can do is go to a gnc or a random nutrition store and do like a taste test.

LIke everyone else said...yes. Swimming is awesome. I am such a pansy and 15-20 minutes of constant swimming laps make me cry, and I don't even go that fast.

12 days for 12 pounds? or for some amount of period of times? because usually losing about 2 pounds per week should be a healthy rate, but this may different for overweight case.

Swimming is good, as long as make sure you are swimming but not floating around. But my swimming skill is suck so bad that, I never wanted to swim anymore lol...

As for run/jog debate, I rather to play sports instead of run/jogging unless I have no choice >.>

1 a day I guess, yeah. At least thus far, and thanks for the suggestions. I am a good swimmer, used to do it competitively when I was younger and more svelte.

@Gui - What's your current height & weight. How many calories are you currently eating? How much exercise are you currently doing?

A pound a day doesn't sound healthy. Is it even possible to lose that amount 'naturally' that fast?

First off I'd say that you're actually starving your body of calories...as big as you are your RMR is probably higher than your daily cal intake.

You should try upping your cal intake to at least 1800, and spread it out a little more across the day.

base on his BMI, it might be possible. But still, I will suggest that if you feel starving when you doing those workout, you may want to take more calories. The best way is more meals but less portion.

BMI is overrated. I'm at just under 12% body fat and in really good shape, but it says that I'm nearly obese (24.3 BMI)

I figured it was normal because I never ate with my health in mind and didn't exercise. Now that I am doing both it wasn't surprising me, I figured it'd be a bit quicker at first and then slow down.

1500-1600 is low, especially for someone who weighs over 200 lbs. Up it to 1800-2000 and you'll probably see even faster weight loss.
