5'11 and 135. A lot of people say I look too skinny, but I actually think I could lose a few pounds.

How old are you? First you'll need to figure out how much calorie you burn, then add around 300-500 calories on top of that. You can go here to see how much calories you burn http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php

Going to the gym is a good start. Lifting weights will help tear muscles to stimulate growth. Good workouts are: squats, deadlifts, bench presses, shoulder presses, lunges, good mornings, lat pulldowns, cable seated/barbell/dumbbell rows, etc. However, you can do a lot of body weight exercises, too, that are just as good: push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squat jumps, lunge jumps, etc. You can get a great workout in 30-45 minutes at the gym. Don't forget to change up your workouts every 6-8 weeks and don't forget to rest. It's good to take a 1 week complete rest between changing workouts because it'll let your body catch up on rest as well as sort of 'reset' your muscles for when you start a new workout. You don't have to completely overhaul your workouts too..minimal changes, different variations of the same workouts, changing the reps x sets are just as good.

If you haven't ever worked out really before, you should see some initial growth, called 'newbie gains', as your body is doing something new and exciting and will build muscle quicker.

    Hope that helps some.

and make sure you eat eat eat, most people don't eat enough because they are petrified of gaining weight and then come back 3-4 months later and wonder why they haven't seen any muscle gains

I highly doubt you need to lose weight, if you want to look better you will almost certainly not achieve it by losing fat (since there's almost no way you could have very much left to lose)... instead you should try to put on some muscle and you'll be a lot happier with the result.

I race bicycles and ANY added weight is a burden especially because I'm a dedicated hill climber. I also do rock climbing so that is rather self explanatory.... Both sports are entirely power to weight driven, and therefore beneficial to do purely strength work and never 'bulk up'. I can bench 1.5x my own weight, every day do about 250 sit ups (5 different ones using different core groups), and bike an average of 50km a day.

I've got a 30 inch waist, 38 inch chest and 23 inch quads. I might be considered underweight, but I'm very fit and I eat more than most people who are over 50% my bodyweight, but yet I don't seem to gain any weight.

Here is a good link I just came across for "hardgainers" : http://www.marksdailyapple.com/gain-...-build-muscle/

I am of a similar build (6'1" 160), and I tried a workout similar to the one above for 3 months a few summers ago and went from 140 -> 157 lbs. After being lazy all of last year I started doing P90X - once I finish I will probably go back to the simple 5x5 workouts referenced in the article.

Ah that's cool. Yeah... I really love Mark's site. It really contradicts/challenges a lot of conventional wisdom, which may make it less popular/appealing to the majority of people here.

I've gained about 10 lbs over the past year of working out (don't weigh myself often, so not quite sure on that estimate) it's just hard for me to eat what I need to to build better mass

Don't need to focus on your stomach area. Unless by focusing there, you mean doing squats/deadlifts/pushups/pull ups, then sure.

    And Cali > FL!

    And what kind of machines???
