exactly. nothing wrong with eating beef, I still love eating a nice steak, or even ground beef like you said, but it's gonna wreck havoc on my insides if I eat it too often. My grandfather has some sort of food allergy to red meat, so for his beef like meat he eats Bison. It's expensive, but it's really good too.

I tend to stick to the regulars of fish, chicken, turkey, and pork.

you can find both at whole foods, but most large supermarkets should carry one or the other as well

^ They sell it everywhere here. Same with Ostrich and other game meats, which btw is absolutely delicious.

I've been using resistance bands for working out. I'm not hardcore or anything but I feel they aren't doing it for me that much anymore. I am interested in buying a free weight set and doing my exercises w/those, any suggestions on what I should buy? I use p90x work outs, I dunno peoples opinions on those but using a gym isn't possible for me atm. My only option is to work out at home. Just looking for a free weight set that anyone can recommend for me, preferably cheap too!

I take a lap around my neighborhood every night (1.2 miles). Now that I've been working out legs the past few months, my legs get tired much quicker than I get winded. I've taking 10-11 mins to finish the run generally, but tonight, I said fuck it, and just pushed it and did 9:35. Trying to cut it down still or at least match that time every time from now on.

Is 8 min mile/average even close to respectable? I know it's not a good time.

Edit: Instead of conventional stretching, is past parallel squats with just the olympic bar a good way of stretching out the leg muscles prior to a run?

There was a direct correlation with me starting to do squats and hit the gym in general and my lower leg issues while running.

Causation im not yet sold on, but its pretty undeniable that lifting has had some impact on my muscle's ability to physically handle running more than 3 miles. I've toyed with the idea of tossing all of my leg workouts, still not sure about that though. I dont want to, but I miss running quite a bit.

8 minutes is okay. Its not great, but its generally the point where you are probably now running non-stop (that isnt some ridiculously pussy pace) and need to start to focus more on picking up your pace, which is also more difficult. Obviously the lower you get the more difficult shaving time off becomes. Might wanna try mixing things up with different distances, intensities (like mix in intervals or something) etc.

A one mile run shouldnt really be that difficult to do in 7 minutes though if you have been doing that distance for any extended period of time. You are a bigger guy iirc though, which can make things more difficult. Pick up the intensity though! One mile is such a short distance to push through, its not like the mind fuck that begins at 3, 6, 10, 26 miles etc. Each one kind of screws with you differently, all about adjusting your pace and intensity to match up with your distance.

yea, I'm just starting this again. I'll try sprinting during choruses and high notes on songs and keeping my pace during the rest of a song. I'm not getting all that winded, but yea my legs really take a beating w/ all my leg based workouts.

Longer stride actually saves your legs if you are struggling with impact issues. If its just your quads/glutes freaking out from the constant stimulation, will probably work itself out and become less of an issue.

Keeping a steady pace for longer runs is the way to go really, you dont want to think about the running aspect any more than necessary and just tends to make it easier to get into the "zone" and just run. Kind of hard to explain I guess, just one of those things that you eventually reach.

I played volleyball and ran cross county in high school. It was brutal the first week or two of switching to the other sport at the end of their respective semesters. Generally depending on what kinda work outs you are doing, you are balling up the muscle in a sense, geared for more strength to push off. Running elongates the muscle. Start of cross country i wouldnt really ever gas out, but my legs would get sore as hell for the first couple weeks until they adapted. When volleyball came around i had lost a few inches in vertical leap for about the first month. So from my personal experience basically just tough it out and let your muscles adapt to the running and pace.

Side note: since Ive been far too busy with work and RL to even browse lately, small update. Finally got myself eatting many smaller meals throughout the day. I did pick up an over the door pull up bar, and with legs held out, works great for me at 6'5. Had to stop my workout routine cause too busy with work, but work is a workout so not too bad. Got down to 186 from 232, and have been slowly adding on healthy muscle and am up to 196. I feel absolutely amazing at this weight, best I have in years. Starting up my routine again this month when work slows down for the holidays. Cheers guys

    Alright!

My form isn't perfect yet, but I'm starting to get used to these squats. The upper shoulder pain isn't gone, but it's tolerable and is no longer the limiting factor.

I started with 2 sets of 115 front squats for warm up. I feel my shoulder was the limiting factor here. Holding the bar up put a lot of stress on it (I have been rly light weight on upper body this week because I started tricep extensions and I think I had bad form last Friday because my shoulder has been hurting ever since).

Then I did a warmup set on 150 lbs for back squat. I felt some tension on my shoulders/upper back, but it was tolerable. So then I up it to 185 and was able to put in 3 sets of 8.

185 is an acceptable starting point for me, so I'm satisfied. I felt I was getting a good workout in my legs and not having the bar on my back being the limiting factor for me.

I don't feel my form is perfect, but I was able to go parallel and my knees didn't go over my toes, so I'll pick up the rest as it goes along.

I did 3 sets of 10 w/ 205 on deadlifts. Was challenging enough, so that will be my starting point for that as well.

Another note, I've had minor lower back problems for some years now. Got into an accident hit a car on my bike when I was 15. My bicycle now is built for someone 4-6 inches taller than me, so I have to lean extra forward, and can always feel it in my back on longer bike rides. When doing general lifting around the house like helping my uncle move things, I can also feel this pain. With both deadlifts and squats, this pain is non existent in any way shape or form, so this is very good. (As I thought that it would be a limiting factor as well).

My favorite time to run tbh. What temp are you looking at? I ask because people have varying degrees of cold. Im sure there are people in Florida and Texas right now with coats, scarves and gloves at its in the low 60s, trust me ive seen it first hand. But if its mild and in the 50s range I wear running shorts, with a long sleeve shirt with an undershirt and head out.

As it gets colder however, I will wear something to keep my throat warm like a turtle neck-esque long sleeve running shirt with an undershirt and a toboggan (hat) and I am fine with that. It really just varies tbh. When I lived in St Louis and would run (Gets cold as shit balls there) then I'd wear thermals and jogging pants with gloves and just do it up. Tyche has a picture somewhere where he is running but is bundled up to hell lol. So yeah, just varies on climate.

Well, you see my location, which is technically an obscure suburb of DC. We got that huge snow last January, if you recall, if that's any indication of the usual gambit.

And yeah, I know it varies, I also know my own sense of it can be WAY skewed in terms of what is healthy to be exposed to since your own internal temps and stuff get out of whack thanks to the elevated heart rate and blood flow, so that's why I ask what generally makes sense. Never had to actually DO it before, heh.
