I am 20 years old and currently 5'11", 129 lbs. As of last week, I began to count my calories and I anticipate to start working out in the next few days. It would be great if you guys could give me some tips and help me out as I am doing this pretty much all by myself. (As I should be...). Thanks in advance.
I will be posting a wall o' text, so bare with me.
Prior to last week, my diet consisted of maybe two meals a day. Like almost every one my weight, I never thought of eating. Was always busy doing things. It came to the point where smells became unpleasant. On Monday, January 10th, I threw up. But, I threw up hardly anything. Maybe just some stomach acid. I can only assume it was from the lack of food. Since then, every time I am extremely hungry I have chest pain and feel very weak. Also since then, it's extremely hard to swallow anything without water. Will be going to the doctor at 4.
January 11th, I aimed for a 2,700+ calorie diet. Here is what my days have looked like..

How am I doing thus far?
Is there anything I should do to improve anything? Any other things I should be eating?
How many calories should I intake before I work out? Should I save my smoothie for after the work out? Or simply have two per day?
How should I work out..? I have yet to walk into a gym. I plan to ask one of the people there. This may have been a silly question.
I'm fully aware that I'm slightly being a "baby" (I think?) about this, but I just would like to make sure that I am doing everything right. I am dedicated and know that this will not be easy. I was given this body and I feel I should take care of it to the best of my ability. It's just extremely tough when the environment around me doesn't provide any information.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Greatly appreciated...
More than willing to post pics and whatnot.
As for your diet, you mean you want to increase your weight? By judge your weight and your height, it definitely you are underweight. But the best way still has some sort of workout.
But anyway, it seems like your meal is very inconsistence. I'm not sure for the others, but to me, I feel like it is better to have at least 3 proper meals everyday. And your stomach issue may also due to the inconsistence meal. Because I have an experience that I only skip a lunch during that day, then I got a serious gastric.
Sitting in a airport waiting on a flight... I haven't been able to workout yet this week. The hotel my work put in me in didn't have any cardio equipment which I was planning on doing for my trip. At least they had a banging ass breakfast. Raisin brand, 2 boiled eggs, 2 turkey sausage links, 1 cup of 2% milk , 1 cup of OJ and a banana. <3
You would think most hotels in Pawleys Island / Myrtle Beach would have some type of cardio equipment.
Quit being a bitch and run outside.
For the above dude, honestly just eat as much as you fucking can lol, especially if you're going to begin working out too. You need to eat...a lot. Always do a a protein/whey shake after working out if you want to be efficient, and as far as workouts go...I mean this thread is littered with em. Depends how many days you want to be in the gym a week before we're gunna start giving you a workout regimen.
First of all, major props to you for taking the initiative in improving your health. Looks like you are eating pretty healthy when you aren't forgetting to eat. The great thing about your situation is you don't really need to be too picky. Just get those calories in. When you start working out, you'll probably want to bump the calories even more. Don't let the cholesterol from the eggs deter you. Eggs are largely beneficial to be eating every day. I try to eat at least 3 every morning (I think it was Richardd that said he has like 10 eggs a day?). You can go with just egg whites, if you'd like, but the yolks aren't going to hurt you too much, unless you are eating like 5 at a time (even then, maybe not?). How is the timing of your meals? Keep in mind, it's better to eat 6 or so smaller meals spaced every 2 hours rather than having just three large meals a day. Personally, I can't really do that with my job, but if you are able then do it.
Also, I'd suggest checking this site out: http://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/beginner.html for some good beginner workouts. You don't need to be jumping into anything too intense for starters. Find something that suits what you want to accomplish and stick with it. After a few months, if you feel comfortable, you can pick up a 4 day split. That site's forums also have some good information regarding nutrition, dieting, and working out for beginners. The people there are very helpful and respectful to beginners. When I started getting really serious about lifting a year ago (edit: actually 2 years ago now), I got most of my information from this site. I used to be a skinny bastard, too, barely able to bench 145. Now I'm warming up with 145 and feeling great with my overall physique. Went from 6' 140lbs to 6' 175.
Yea, echoing what Minnich said...don't be afraid or embarrassed to go into the gym or ask for help. I hear so many people say they're afraid to go because they are a noob, but that is just silly. Everyone is a noob at some point, just be eager to learn and you will receive respect. People just don't look down on others, its not how things work...unless you act like a total douchebag.
Haha, it's all wet and cold here. I'd rather not go running in a city I've never been in before. The place were I was staying was not the ideal setup to run in by any means. I normally don't do any cardio I just planned on supplementing cardio since I would be unable to lift. Anyways I'm gonna hit 4 days straight this week to get in my full workout, take Sunday off then back to normal for now.
fuck I miss cheeseburgers and ice cream![]()
Odd thing happened at the gym today.
I was doing squats and when I finished a set a person who was beside me made a comment that my knees were going past my ankles. A definite no no when it comes to squats. Now I have very long quads, so its very hard for me to keep my knees behind my ankles if I want to go down as much as I can. If I am to go all the way down and keep my knees behind my ankles I have to lean back quite significantly - enough that I actually fall backwards if doing it freeweight.
Should I just brush off his advice? Or should I start to rethink my form? I'm 5'11 with an inseam of 34.4''. so you can see that I have very long legs.
Herp me out BG fitness!
I used to weigh ~278lbs (5'9), after I switched to working from home on an overnight shift (i.e: i lived off the corner store and delivery). Once I hit my high I got fed up, I actually had a personal trainer for a little while, dropped to 240. Stopped going to trainer/gym cuz well, I started to hate it, back up to 255 in a couple months.
I ended up going out of town for a new job for 3 weeks, and from simply walking 1 hour each day and eating normally (prolly less healthy than I should've), I dropped 11lbs in 3 weeks. Got home, 2 weeks later, up 7lbs.
My knees are semi shitty, I can't really run for more than 5 minutes, I ended up buying an eliptical (was a really really good deal during boxing week).
Since then i've been eating well, doing 30 minutes on the elpitical every 2nd day (4.5~4.7miles) along with 15 pushups, 30 situps and 15 squats. To be honest, I don't really know wtf i'm doing, I just know i'm dropping weight, back down to 240, if my goal is to lose ~3lbs a week for 12 weeks, will doing what i'm doing get me there (increasing the totals bit by bit)?
@Gustave - Don't need a gym to get a good cardio workout. Calisthenics? Always bring a jump rope with you...best cardio ever and least amount of room taken!
@Shukudai - Congrats on getting back to it again. How is your eating this time around? Did you mention how you're eating now? Losing weight is 80% diet (i.e. your eating habits, not going on a diet).
Sit ups don't really do much... maybe do more core exercises like planks? Also try to incorporate pulling motions (e.g. pull-ups). IronGym is pretty awesome and cheap. If you can't lift weights, try body weight workouts. I have this great ebook you can follow by Mark's Daily Apple for working out. If not, http://www.marksdailyapple.com/bodyweight-workout/ is a VERY hard workout..killer.
If your knees are crappy..walking is way low impact and good, too.
Keep at it..and good luck.
edit: plan to lose 1-2 lbs a week... You can get away with 3lbs/week initially due to being slightly overweight...but eventually, it's healthier to aim for 1-2 lbs/week. Losing weight slower is better (especially for reducing chance of loose skin). Lifting weights/doing body weight exercises will help persevere/build/maintain muscles.
I'm assuming the person talking about the knees not going past the ankles confused ankles with toes.
has anyone tried any of the new ON bars yet?
http://www.optimumbars.com/
some of them have some pretty good macronutrient ratios but I'm really hoping they taste good.
edit: oh wow, they are 36 bucks for a box of 12, they can go fuck off
edit edit: oh ok they look a lot cheaper on amazon
Yeah, I am "aiming" for 3lbs a week for 12 weeks, but realistcally I know i'll probably get a lot 2 lbs in thereWalking is out of question mostly, cuz while I don't mind eliptical, it's often -20 or worse outside here atm
My diet is fine, only scheduling is a bit hard, I am trying very hard to eat around the same time every day, and nothing 3 hours before I go to bed.
Lifting weights is not a problem, I like that, I just need to buy a bar and weights or something, nothing too heavy, in the gym i've let that shit drop and it'd break my floor here.
The iron gym thing, for doing pull ups, I was looking at, I was just more worried that since my apartment isn't that new, if it'd break the crap out of the wood on the top of the doorway trying to hold it in place or whatever.
[edit]lol holy crap at that work out >_> I could not do 3 reps of that. Or 2. Maybe one lol, and i'd pass out after it :D Maybe in 2 months I could![]()
I've always heard keep your knees over your feet. It helps me keep the rest of my form correct.
@Wei Yea I used to do a lot of jump rope for conditioning in high school. I was at academy sports looking at a the jump ropes a couple weekends ago. I might swing by and pick one up.
