I usually have sarnies for lunch and i have always used butter/margarine with the bread, something which i intend on stopping. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an alternative, preferably low on fat because as much as i want to stop using the stuff i find it hard to eat sarnies dry. Especially when i've got something like chicken on them, shit gets hard to swallow.

Nothing wrong with moderate fats, you'd be better served cutting down the carbs. I eat about 6 or 7 meals a day and 2\3 tops contain direct sources of carbs(bread, oatmeal, rice or potatoes)

I would echo the not too much carbs, especially from grains. I don't usually (80% of the time) eat breads, rice, oatmeal, and potatoes. BUt that's just my personal diet preference.

Fat is good. Don't be afraid of saturated fats. Some saturated fat is good (butter, eggs, and coconut oil). Saturated fat is needed to nourish your cells and other bodily functions. It's ok to stick with butter. HOWEVER, stick with actual butter, rather than margarine, as butter is made from whole foods/milk (HOPEFULLY) while margarine is made from oil that has been processed. Don't use those spray butter crap, either...

I use butter all the time when I cook, especially with eggs or veggies. mmm. I like my butter that only has 2 ingredients at most: milk and salt (though usually I have unsalted butter).

    Edit:
If you're adamant about substituting your butter...maybe hummus? olive oil (at least it's unsaturated fat which conventional wisdom deems ok, maybe that'll ease your conscience some?)? Pesto? Mustard? avocado?

Whats with the carb hating? Would say it depends on body type and what you are trying to accomplish. Shit is your energy, I love my carbs.

I like...carbs that come mainly from vegetables? :D

I'm the oddball here, methinks. I just find paleo/primal diet (high fat/high protein/low carb, only from veggies and some fruit) too logical to ignore.

How are you possibly getting enough from veggies only? They have low amounts of carbs and fruit is a lot of sugar. Complex carbs 4tw.

How much carbs do you really need? 100-150g tops? Allows for body to use fat as energy burning fuel.

nothing wrong with fruit sugar, as it's natural. I don't eat a lot of really sugar-y high glycemic index fruit anyway. Usually blueberries and strawberries as my mainstay and oranges/apples as I want.

edit: You eat however you like. I just want people to see there are other ways to eat other than what convention dictates. It makes people start questioning convention and really dissect/question what they are told to do. As long as you are doing your own research/being informed on what is best for YOU, that's all that matters.

What she said, your body doesn't need carbs or in all honesty even want them. Fats are the body's preferred method of fuel, the idea of the body using of glucose(carbs) fuel is a rather modern one.

Most chicks I see on those stepmills are usually hunched over the front with their arms over the handles. Shit's easy when all your weight is displaced away from your legs.

Yeah. And they think they are working so hard when they're holding on to dear life... Same thing with ellipticals, when people hold on real tight and move their legs really fast.

About p90x, I think it's pretty sustainable. Sure after the first 90 you may not be following the 6 day a week intense workout plan, but after a while you'll start to figure out what kind of body you want to get and can setup your own routine. I can't do intense workout 6 days a week anymore because I have baseball games on the weekends, so I decided that I should probably take 1-2 days off before games so that I'm not sore. The workouts are intense enough though that even 3-4 days per week (it's only an hour a day remember, 1:20 on days that you do Abs) keeps me feeling very good. I play a lot of basketball, so for me I just cut down on the cardio days and try to keep in the lifting days. To each their own though, the workouts are really good so you can make your own routine easily.

It's really expensive like someone said, but I found a torrent easily and just use my PC or ps3 to play it and everything works no prob. I don't know how to upload stuff really, but if people want the discs and care to explain how to go about uploading it I don't mind sharing.

getting your body to go into ketosis is pretty tough though, you need to eat a lot less than 100-150g carbs and make sure the rest of your diet is spot on perfect. You can't get there just by staying away from most/certain carbs. It's really easy to mess up ketogenic diet too, just because it's so much trial and error.

I love carbs too, but I stay away from white carbs (white potato, white flour, white sugar) because they make me drowsy and bloated. I eat plenty of whole grains, brown rice, and especially sweet potato, in addition to fruits/veggies.

And as for p90x, there's an old adage that "any workout plan will work for 6 weeks". P90x is a pretty good cutting routine, but I definitely wouldn't purposely switch to it for bulking purposes especially if you have access to a squat cage/power rack and a barbell.

Oh and I only do the elliptical without hands now, took a week or 2 when I first started to get my balance but hands-free elliptical incorporates your core really, really well.

Yeah. Ketosis is at what? 0-50g of carbs at most? Even at 50-150(tops), can still mainly use fat as fuel.

I used to really love carbs, but since I've shifted, I don't mind not eating it. Much of it is the long cooking time, as I've said before long time ago... haha. Although I really fail since I still eat frozen yogurt, cookies (rarely but still do), and stuff like that sometimes...

I wouldn't think p90x would be good for anything other than cutting?

and @ no-hand elliptical- awesome! I bet it really does utilize your core a lot.

I would guess that if you're maintaining a caloric surplus you could use p90x to build muscle, especially for the first 6 weeks when you get that nice recomp effect, but past that point there's a lot more effective things you can do with a barbell to bulk or even isolation machines.

edit: and my only problem with P90x is that people do it, have mild to moderate success (success that could easily be replicated or exceeded with other plans, mind you), then instantly transform into P90x experts who travel across the internet extolling its virtues as a messianic workout plan that will let you burn fat and gain muscle at the same time, tone up, suck your dick, and make you a sandwich.

Gym Jones (principles) and Military Athlete are more suited for bulking, but require modifications to that end.

Since Gym Jones is a proponent of you actually understanding why you're doing x type of workout on a certain day, as well as diet in regards to specific desired results...it's very easy to follow one of their programs, read the literature, and go on your own from there.

The only problem with that, and I'm guilty myself, is it's very easy to stray from doing random or varied exercises and sticking to what you like and are comfortable with.

Military Athlete also teaches you the why, and has a bigger (and sole) focus on one type of Gym Jones principle (the anytime power endurance, or 'operator fitness').

It also incorporates some stretching/yoga like P90X, and workouts are 1 hour in length and are designed to test different aerobic and anaerobic thresholds while conducting power movements.

Stock up on Almonds/Cashews/Peanuts. Those are my snacks if I am hungry, also those Pita Chips by Ms. Stacy I think or whatever are money.
