I'm really trying to convince myself into playing Tales of Vesperia. Wife just finished it and she seemed to have a lot of fun with it.

First Tales I ever played was Destiny, left the series alone for a few years and decided to pick up Legendia. That game has traumatized me from Tales game with it's ridiculous level of suck.

I'm actually starting to appreciate Symphonia's story this time around, even though it's still convoluted and contrived at a lot of points. there are a few emotional scenes that had an impact on me though, like...

    you tell him, girl.
I tend to stick with the Main Character as my lead in most games for whatever reason. I like to balance sentimentality with efficiency so I don't nerd-up the experience. lol

    God that was so terrible.

But Chloe was the most overpowered character ever.

Prima Donna + Stunn, Demon Fang, Double Demon Fang.... could solo anything without even taking damage.

Personally I had played good part of tales with two people normally and rarely 4 people, so I played good many different characters in Symphonia, Sheena was by most fun to play if you ask me, though I also liked using loyd, genis, and raine. Though I haven't play any tales games yet besides Symphonia and it's sequel[overall good battle system similar to original but with monsters, and decent story line for it].

I played all of them, at least the ones I could play in english. They were all fantastic for when they came out. I hear RPG, I think tales automatically. However, the more recent games, while still good, are starting to feel generic to me.

Same here, if it's in English (fan translations count)... I've played it.
I've played some of the JP only stuff too.

I've played some ToD2 and ToD: DC, very little of those. Also played and beat TotW:RM2 and beat all the stories on Tales of VS. I haven't unlocked all of the characters though. And uh, I only played Tales of Wallbreaker once, I think it sucks.

Can't wait for Tales of Graces, it looks like it's gonna be awesome.

I'm not a fan of Tales of Hearts or Tales of Innocence though, the battle systems in both of those games seem to be too broken to me.

In Symphonia I usually get the itch to play all the characters from time to time, but for the most part I like to play Raine, especially if I'm playing through on Mania, it's a lot of fun. I also like to play Colette and Zelos/Kratos for the weird combos you can do. I really like the mix of melee and spellcasting those characters have.

I actually really enjoyed Symphonia's story, and I agree that while I love the little cut in scenes and the funny stuff some of the characters do, the serious stuff that goes down doesn't feel that out of place when you remember that most of the people in the group are supposed to be pretty young. I also love conficting romances that go on in Symphonia. The protective/shy romance that goes on between Lloyd and Colette, the bittersweet romance between Sheena and Zelos, and the crush between Genis and Presea. I think it all adds up to characters you get to know very well and for me at least, makes me enjoy the game more.

I still haven't finished Vesperia yet but I love what I've already played through so far, I fell in love with Estellise and Yuri right off the bat, just like with Lloyd and Colette.

Really? How does Raine play on Mania? I'd think that would be really hard... I need to do a Mania run-through after I finish this one and try it out though. I guess I could switch over to Mania now but I'm happy with Hard (except on Botta + Yuan, cheap sons of bitches)

I think the big reason I can't get over Lloyd is that the other characters take a lot longer to develop in battle, whereas he can string together some pretty impressive combos very near the beginning. I do want to experiment with Presea, since her techs link together in a similar manner to Lloyd's but focus a lot more on power than speed, and Regal, since he's still a physical fighter but has his own unique style. I like Sheena too, but she can't get into high-hit combos very easily, plus a lot of her moves knock the enemy down.

But then again, it's just so addicting using Lloyd to four-hit attack -> Sword Rain -> Tiger Rage -> Raining Tiger Blade/Sword Rain Beta -> time one of your ally's hits to keep the enemy staggered -> start over. I got the 60-hit combo title without even trying, I'm sure I could hit 100 easily using the shortcut buttons and manual commands. And I haven't even tried his ex skill that links one tech to another same-level tech yet, even more combo heaven!

Man, I just cannot get into the story, I really dislike it. That's not to say that it's a bad story, but it's filled with too many hyper-dramatic moments and unbelievable plot twists for my tastes. I'm more of a subtle political intrigue type of guy, my favorite videogame producer is Yasumi Matsuno. But I love the characters for the most part, and really, I never play a Tales game for the story. It's all about the battles.

So yeah, definitely not a bad story, per se. Just doesn't sit well with me personally.

I've never really been a fan of the storylines of the Tales games myself even though this is my very favorite video game series. Period.

I absolutely love the characters, combat and music in most of the games though. Symphonia has so many memorable battle themes.
