I will not be getting it. I don't have health insurance and while the cost is probably not that high, it is pretty unlikely that I will get sick.
Got the regular flu shot already this season (for free, score!) and waiting on the H1N1 shots to come in here and then I'm on the list to get that one for free too - university covers the cost for all people with conditions/etc. that make them priority for getting it.
I'm not getting it. There's no point. Like polio, the swine flu is made out to be much worse than it really is.
Besides, the vaccine only lasts for 4 months. If it mutates and end up being more deadly next year, I'll get a vaccination then.
Im probably not going to get it. Not for any hippy reason such as holistic reason or that shit, but because I just don't feel like waiting in line to get a flu shot. As bad as the flu is (I've had several friends who have gotten it), its not something I am overly worried about right now.
I'll just wash my hands thoroughly and clean my house a little more than I used to.
Ok I can't let this go.Thimersol has been proven to dramatically raise mercury levels far above normal. Mercury is a neuro-inhibitor. It has been linked to autism. Why do you think autism has dramatically increased the last 10 years? In the last 10 years the number of vaccines for the newborn have skyrocketed. Personally, I will refuse to get any of my children vaccinated until they are 5 years old, and then, one at a time over a period of a few years.
The currently accepted vaccination schedule for Newborns has been in place since the 70's, and only in the last 10 years have retards like you decided to not vaccinate their kids for whatever silly reason. There has been absolutely zero link between vaccinations and autism, none whatsoever. It should also be noted that there is actually far less Mercury in the newer vaccinations than there was years ago.
The most likely reason for the rise of Autism is probably the increase of women over 35 having children in recent years. There is an enormous amount of evidence that shows women over 35 have dramatically higher rate of children with birth defects, and the sudden rise of Autism falls in line with this. While it probably isn't the primary reason its definitely a factor.
As for flu vaccinations, I've never had one and I've never had the flu, so I wouldn't get the H1N1 vaccination either.
Well, Sephir, washing your hands doesn't really matter that much. The risk of catching it supposedly doesn't really improve by washing your hands all the time. And I don't think cleaning your house more would help either, unless your house catches the flu.
I read in the paper yesterday or the day before (can't remember now) that health authorities in Nova Scotia aren't seeing any flu strain but H1N1 in hospitals. The seasonal flu is getting forced out by the H1N1 virus somehow.
How does one virus force out another? Does getting the H1N1 make you immune to the seasonal? Are they that closely related?
I've heard that also the fact that people in North America have been breathing in lead gas fumes pretty consistently over the last hundred years or so doesn't help with autism and birth defects either. Remember how the lead pipes of the Roman Empire brought that empire down?
I've also heard from a speech pathologist nurse who works with autistic cihldren that a lot of the reason people put the blame on vaccines is because they want something/someone to blame for their children's problems that is not themselves. She said that autism has a lot of genetic links and that parents don't like to hear that they caused it simply by breeding.
NHS (National Health Service) in the UK is still going through the risk groups and looking at the information on their website non-risk peeps probably won't get the jab at all unless the situation gets really bad. I'd like to get it for the sake of my baby more than anything but seeing how we're all generally healthy and nobody in our immediate vicinity is even in a risk category it's pretty much guaranteed we will be last to get the jab if we get it at all.
It seems some shrill idiots don't understand that American bankers are more important than pregnant women.CDC Criticized for Distributing Scarce Flu Vaccines to Wall St. Firms
And calls are growing for an investigation into why health officials have handed out swine flu vaccines to some of Wall Street’s leading financial firms while they’re unavailable to most Americans. More than a dozen companies were given the vaccines, including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan Chase. The Center for Disease Control says the companies met several criteria, including having a large number of employees and their own medical staff. But critics say the CDC has violated its own calls to distribute the vaccine only to those at highest risk. In a statement, Melanie Sloan of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said: “Although CREW has been unable to uncover the demographic makeup of [these companies], it seems safe to assume the vast majority of their employees are not pregnant women, infants and children, young adults up to 24 years old, and healthcare workers.”

There actually isn't any evidence that her dystonia was caused by the flu shot, her VAERS report was found (not tough, she's the only person in a long time in that record with dystonia) and the judgements were significantly different than what was portrayed in the media. There is a chance that it could have been caused by the shot, but there's no evidence. The burden of proof for VAERS isn't the same as in a court, you really only need to show a suspicion.
Think of it this way, in every population there's a nonzero chance that a person will develop the symptoms of dystonia at a given time. There is also a chance that a flu shot will be administered immediately before symptoms develop. As humans, we search for patterns and meanings to everything, and tend to trust our intuition before anything else. Our intuition says "I got poked with something new 10 days ago, therefore that must be the problem" and it makes sense to us. But that's classic correlation =/= causation.
Also, according to a blog in her name, she is quoted as saying she is getting much better and the family hopes for a full recovery.

shouldn't be scared of H1N1 silly kids
This is very true, there's a complicated genetic background to autism which is the best current explanation for why it's a spectrum disorder. Recent reports have linked lots of genes to autism, but there has never been a link found with vaccines in any way, shape or form. Scientists are actually getting pissed now because these anti-vax fools keep demanding more "studies" when they don't like what the current ones show and it's taking time and money away from other leads. If there is an environmental component, there is no evidence that it's vaccines.

Dumbass.
Also: Not getting the vaccine. For one thing, I'm not within the highest risk group, and it takes a good six months to make a good batch of vaccine - i.e. there could be potential shortages of vaccine to go 'round. For another, I'm pretty sure I already had it last year before the virus was even officially dubbed H1N1, and I got through it by simply keeping hydrated and warm.
Protip: It's not the swine flu that kills you. Its whatever you contract or develop after your immune system is run ragged after the influenza. Same as, shock horror, the regular flu! There is absolutely nothing special about swine flu that makes it any more potent or deadly than the regular strains of influenza.
Anyone remember SARS?
All this paranoia, both against and for the vaccine, is very reminiscent of that situation.
I should get it because of my added exposure risk - I use public transportation daily.
Got the shot simply because I was in the right place at the right time. Or wrong place at the wrong time? lol
Work at a hospital and my coworker wanted to get it because he has a new baby. Just happened to be walking down the hall with him when we passed the person giving the shots wheeling her cart around. We rolled up our sleeves and got jabbed.
I honestly wasn't worried enough to seek out the shot, but since I was right there I figured "why not?". I don't think H1N1 is anything to be scared of, but neither is the shot.
Did you get vaccinated against the bird flu, anthrax, and the west nile virus too? I didn't, and I managed to never contract or die from any of those! I know; a true medical miracle. I should be on Ripley's Believe it or Not!™ I would even go so far as to say I never even came into contact with any of those things, although the media coverage at the time would have made you believe it was impossible to go outside without a hazmat suit on and remain healthy. Scare tactics in the American media are more often than not in favor of vaccinating yourself against some threat they've worked to hype up far beyond a normal level of concern. Generating intense fear of various relatively rare illnesses that are even more rarely fatal is kind of their bag. I'm simply refusing to buy into that panic.
You'll never hear me say that vaccines cause autism or you shouldn't vaccinate your children against basic things like MMR, polio, and whatever else. I do believe that it's completely reasonable to say that a small percentage of people probably have bad or severe reactions to vaccinations and that some vaccinations are just not warranted for some people. I just don't believe in rushing out for an injection full of science magic for every teeny tiny threat on earth is reasonable.
Oh, and I was looking in the wrong place on the CDC site for information earlier:

Holy fuck, you mean about 1.5% of people die of this? PANDEMIC PANDEMIC EVERYONE GO GET VACCINATED JESUS CHRIST!!! Or we could just stop panicking, pass the fucking hand sanitizer, stay home when we get sick to prevent hacking our disease all over our coworkers, and generally practice good hygiene and disease-spreading prevention. These figures don't seem even remotely significant. I'll gladly eat my words when the H1N1 takes out 30% of the total population because we didn't get vaccinated, but until then I'm gonna just treat it exactly like I treat flu shots of every other kind in every other year and just not do it.
P.S. What Jehryn said.
Vaccines are for fags. Fags and AY-RABBS.
