    Unusual Unidentified Network problem.

Hi there BG, posting this before the internet cuts off again..

I recently got a new modem from comcast, and a new router, Linksys WRT55AG Dual-Band Wireless A+G Broadband Router.

My new modem i've had for about 2 days, first day it was working fine, and then it just started stuttering on and off.

Now on my PC which is connected by ethernet I am getting a "Unidentified Network" Problem, and i've tried absolutely everything trying to fix this problem.

Now the weird part, I am on the internet on my laptop connected wireless.

    Anyone have any idea ?

I'm assuming you've done the basic stuff like power cycling, dns cache flush, etc right?

Also, I'm a bit confused by your post. Is your laptop working fine on the same network, or do you have separate wireless from your cable? Also, what do you mean by 'stuttering' in reference to the modem?

Here's something to try to see if this is related to the computer or the router assuming both computers are using the cable connection; use the properties for the driver on the PC to emulate the MAC of your laptop with your laptop powered off (or at least the WiFi turned off) and see if it connects fine. Also, does the laptop work when connected by line instead of wireless?

Hm, I'm sorry, I did not understand half the things you said. xD

I just googled and followed a bunch of advice, and it didn't work.

    Laptop is connected by wireless.

I have not power cycling, dns cache flush, etc.

As far as I know, I only have -one- network.

going to try to use my ethernet cable on laptop and see if it works.

EDIT: Okay the ethernet cable works on my laptop.

also some other information, my laptop is windows 7 as well as my computer.

EDIT2: Tried Powercycling, dnsflush, hard reset, bough a new WTR54G2 router, tried the same stuff, tried using the CD that came with it to configure the network.
The weird thing is that when the PC is connected to the router through the ethernet, the wireless stops working. Wireless works fine on the laptop if it's unplugged. When the ethernet is connected to the PC, 192.168.1.1, the default IP address to the router wont work either to configure it.

    I was just at his house trying to fix it, we tried deleting it from the control panel to reinstall it, tried updating drivers, tried using 2 different seperate PCI NIC cards, nothing worked lol... He said he used some torrent tweaks he found on google since he kept disconnecting on his old A/G dual band linksys router, but after undoing everything he said he did, still didn't work. So just had him reinstall win7 >.>;

If the default IP of the router is not working try, 192.168.0.1 or 1.0, mine changes itself on me all the time.
Its sounds like its a configuration issue, can you laptop see the network? and as soon as you connect it the hard wire connection dies?

Well, the default ip of the router did work for the laptop, just never the PC. Yeah the laptop works perfectly fine with wireless or wired, until you connect the PC wired, then it goes crazy. and then there's the issue of random computer freezes.

Installing win7 itself was a challenge, it'd hang in the setup to expand files. Had to use a different dvd and that worked. After it installed, it recognized the onboard NIC with the standard drivers like before (the PC worked fine until he changed routers and internet) but the same issue persisted. So I guess the either the onboard NIC is fried or worsecase, the motherboard is dying.

Ended up just sticking a wireless card in the PC to get it up and running again, kinda lame since the router is just 2 feet away x.x
