Have you done some testing? I wouldn't mind seeing some numbers.

Didn't the update notes from back when they made summoning skill actually do something state that only skill above cap mattered, in terms of increased accuracy/ward duration? And as far as I know, skill never influenced attack.

There are, of course, benefits to having capped skill (Siphon, Avatar's Favor, etc.), but in terms of the accuracy/ward duration thing, those are just bonuses for skill beyond cap and do not penalize you for being under cap, as far as I'm aware.

wait...wut? i seriously hope you are trolling.
It is true. The only thing summoning skill affects "Capped or Below" is Elemental Siphon and Elemental Spirit cast rate.

    Summoning Skill.

Points overcap is the only thing that matters. So the difference between 269 skill(without any gear) and 0 skill(without any gear) is nothing(Besides Elemental Siphon that is).

By the way, Summoning Skill "overcap" only affects duration and accuracy of Blood Pacts, not damage or anything.

See the wiki link for more info.

    POL source:

The summoner job has undergone the following adjustments:

The summoner pet command Blood Pact has been divided into two categories

Blood Pact: Rage (Recast time: 1 minute)
Orders the avatar to use special attacks.

Blood Pact: Ward (Recast time: 1 minute)
Orders the avatar to use support abilities.

-Blood Pact will now receive different effects when the value added by equipment or merit points exceeds the skill cap for that level.

*Players can experience increased accuracy when using Blood Pact: Rage or lengthened effect durations when using Blood Pact: Ward. The length of the duration increased varies depending on which Blood Pact is used, but will not exceed 180 seconds.

*A player whose summoning magic skill is lower than the skill cap will not experience any penalties, such as a decrease in accuracy or shortened effect durations.

-Players will now also experience increases in skill when using the Blood Pact: Rage and Blood Pact: Ward pet commands.
Anyway, it seems one skill overcap is 1 acc and 1 magic acc, so while 269 is no different than 0 skill; if the 269 SMN has SMN skill gear and/or merits, it'll affect accuracy. Most average SMNs(from just getting Evoker's Ring and Summoner Torque and some Merits) have over 30 skill over cap, so that translate to about +30 accuracy which is a big deal.

But anyway, the person was right, there is no difference(besides Siphon MP amount and spirit cast time) between 269 and 0 summoning skill UNLESS the 269 is going overcapped(which he clarified when he said "Fresh SMN").

Because Summoner is the one job with the most misinformation posted about it, ever.

SMN was my first job to 75 waaaaaay back in the day when ppl though DRK was the worst melee job ever cause of bad acc and BLM still level'd in xp parties using magic burst. So I've had over capped SMN skill for ever. Before SE gave a real purpose to it. So under 269 has never affected me.

And pretty much exactly what Jeryhn said. Only thing I care about my SMN is that I know how to play the job well and get the most out of everything it can do. But good to have that clarified.

I dunno, I feel like that crown goes to PUP.

PUP is already rare as it is, plus it's already a pretty complicated job with all the attachments and stuff, and learning about automaton behaviors etc...

But yeah, SMN is probably not that well known either.

SMN probably takes the crown, since its been like 7 years since its release, and only recently did people figure out how to calculate avatar accuracy on equipment and such..
Avatars are an enigma because you can't see their stats and they work so unpredictably that its hard to decifer.

At least with automatons, you can view their stats, customize accordingly, run tests based on stats and so on. PUP has made superb progress since it was first introduced and has definitely surpassed SMN in terms of understanding it (at least from those who actually play the job). The only real enigma left with PUP really is Tactical Processor.

    edit: better test results below

idk if this is posted in this thread, because I haven't read it nor plan to because I use Smn a lot for Soloing mainly so I'm more concerned with Perpetuation cost BUT...

I noticed that they ninja patch the "xxx is too far away." and you'd have to wait for the timer to recover. Well, they got rid of that and if your BP doesn't go off, you can use it again until the BP does go off.

IDK IF THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN SAID SO PLZ DUN FLAME :<

No you don't. Timer still resets if you get out-of-range message.
    Verified this myself.

The timer does not reset if your avatar gets hit with Stun or Amnesia.

its been around since like 2 updates ago...

    correcting myself now..

    Carbuncle's Favor
    Regen effect

    Base: 1hp/tic
    +10s: 2hp/tic
    +20s: 3hp/tic
    +30s: 4hp/tic
    +40s: 5hp/tic
    +50s: 6hp/tic
    +55s: 8hp/tic
    +65s: 10hp/tic
    +75s soft cap: 12hp/tic
    +85s hard cap: 15hp/tic

hard cap meaning 317+ smn skill....

this is probably the easiest to test..
I suspect Titan works in a similar fashion but that would be much harder to test given that you kinda need to refresh the equipment menu to see the change in def
but in any case only the max values for him are important..

not true. I just did campaign like an hour ago and I was readying my BP again and again chasing Shadowhand.

Timer doesn't reset if you get out-of-range.

You won't be allowed to even BP if avatar is stunned/amnesia/slept at the point when you execute the pet command.
If they receive the status during the readying period, then your timer is still wasted.

Timer is also still wasted if the mob dies during the readying period, or if your perp cost eats into the BP cost during the readying period, meaning to say you don't have enough MP to execute the BP.

Oh hey, thanks for showing me a bunch of shit i ALREADY KNEW, the diffrence between that 100 skill summoner and the 269 smn, is one will be wiffing more, the other wont, because even before 75 there are SMN skill + gear, there is NO smn with 269 base that will just sit there and keep it there with no other peice of +smn magic skill, even af horn has +5 ffs, , elemental shipon alone is enough to keep skill up, so yes there IS A difference, for none-retarded SMNs who actually aren't walking around comepletly naked.

My point remains, it was a stupid comment. but next time i'll put the word " for those with common sense" in there.

Well, I dunno what's wrong with you guys then, because I was just fine on re-commanding Predator Claws on tonberries last night for unlit lanterns with a SMN group.

    So were they.

I phrased what I said poorly. I meant that in the past, you'd have to wait for it to recover, where as now you do not.

Least that's what I got from doing the Shantotto fights.

I'm not aware of any solid "avatar: enhance acc/attack" testing. Could you link or PM me the info~?

lol I was saying it didn't reset. I was fine on it too. Could reuse immediately.

I think we all took reset to mean the opposite thing

So, I did some small Ifrit's Favor testing using Kparser... though you'll have to forgive me, as I'm not terribly familiar with the program and am sort of figuring it out as I go along. I disconnected from FFXI before I could test anymore >.< R0 woes:

    Ifrit's Favor - Test #1
    http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...vor_Test01.jpg

    - Done on Robber Crabs in Kuftal Tunnel
    - Waited for Ifrit's Favor to be on for at least 1min 30s before trying to attack.

I'm sure I didn't toggle some sort of option or something... it doesn't seem right. Though it is a small sample test, so I can't say much about it right now.

I'd appreciate any help with this so I can try to get more accurate testing done~ thanks all.
