Ok, dumb question. But if a current video card does not possess directX 11 (say, the GeForce GTX 275 ) will future driver updates amend this? Or just s.o.l. with that card and stuck w/ Direct 10?

From wiki : Direct3D 11 runtime will introduce Direct3D 9, 10, and 10.1 "feature levels", compatibility modes which only allow the use of hardware features defined in the specified version of Direct3D. For Direct3D 9 hardware, there will be three different feature levels, grouped by common capabilities of "low", "med" and "high-end" video cards; the runtime will directly use Direct3D 9 DDI provided in all WDDM drivers.
But by the time D11 is widely used probably is better just to upgrade video card.
There won't be a patch that will support DX11 because hardware requirements are different.
