We in America prefer mm/dd/yyyy because it makes the most practical sense.

When you speak a date you say it in mm/dd/yyyy not the other way around. Who the hell says "My birthday is the 17th day of November, 1988?(dd/mm/yyy)
Most people just say "My birthday is November 17th, 1988"(mm/dd/yyyy)
On the street when you ask someone the for the date they simply say "Oh today's November 10th 2009." Why go through all the trouble of using the month in possessive form such as "It's the 10th day of November, 2009."
See it takes longer!

We do say it dd/mm/yy. Most people will probably know the month, its the day that changes fastest and most likely what a person will want to know. IT MAKES MOST SENSE BECAUSE I SAY SO, AND IT WILL STAY THAT WAY OR L'LL CRY.

Anyway, I'd like to thank this thread for enlightening me. I didn't know Americans actually said the month first in every day speech, thought it was just a weird movie thing >_>;

Too bad it's pretty awkward in everyday speech.

month/day/year makes more sense imo.

28-31 days in a month
2009 years to current.

It's not because there are more days than there are months I think of it as more logical, but because a day is shorter than a month. And as noted earlier, knowing the day of the month is what "most" people are after when they ask "what's today's date" or whatever phrase they use.

Pretty sure most people will only say they day and not the month... If the person you are talking to doesnt know what month it is, then knowing what date it is is the least of their problems...
