Honestly considering joining the Military, what should I seriously expect?

I have no money, no friends, barely a place to live, and something you really can't consider a family. I have given joining the military a lot of thought, but to be honest, i'm still not sure what I should do. I'm going nowhere with my life as it stands right now.

Joining the military might give me the education and physical training I might need to do something worthwhile in my life. I'm 5'10" 130lbs., neither healthy or unhealthy, and honestly have never worked out a day in my life.

    My questions are:
What should I seriously expect upon joining the military?

Can my skinny ass handle it?

What field is best for someone that isn't very physical nor intelligent?

Edit: I've been a member of BG for a long time, I read a lot, and as you can see i've never found much to post about.

I'm fine with whatever is said, it's advice whether it's good or bad. I'm aware there are a lot of tards here, and hopefully what they say will actually help.

Nah, joining the army should be your last resort. They always prey on the poor, minorities, and those who think there aren't any other alternatives.

I'd recommend you to check your local community college. You can get financial aid, housing, etc. etc. you just have to go out there and look for it.

I attempted The University of phoenix Online classes twice. None of their classes interested me in the least, so I couldn't stick to it. I couldn't make it through the first 9 weeks which are just beginner classes to get you used to school. It was just hard for me to stay focused on it as uninteresting as it was.

Online classes are not a good idea. Without a classroom setting, it's much harder to stay motivated. Community colleges are a good way to get your foot in the door, because the work usually isn't too difficult, and you'll be in a classroom setting.

That was your first mistake. I'd never recommend you to take online classes for that same reason. You need to find something you're passionate about, shit that you like to do. Talk to your advisers and so on, take GE classes for now. Also, check your community college and find a trade. Finding a goal should be your primary objective.

Having already owing Financial Aid, I don't think i'd be able to get it and still go to a community college. There is one in town, and I am interested in school, but I do not have the money to attend. No clue what I can do about Financial Aid now.

Talking to someone who is in the army and has a hard-on for it I have heard the good, bad, and ugly things about it and I myself have given it some thought.

If your not in shape and by that I mean able to run 5+ miles without stopping then you need to start or basic training will kick your ass.

If you can get the hang of how hard they will work you out then surviving basic training isn't so bad but you have to be ready to run and run a LOT. I know quite a few guys who run 4+ miles a day who had to drop out from stress fractures in their legs from all the running they put you through.

Anyways if you can get beyond that you then get to choose what you want to do which can be anything to an engineer or a communications guy or whatnot.

I thought about joining because from what my friend says you get a ton of money because its hazard pay but I have heard the other end that they don't shit but I am sure its better then where you are at now in your life but you can get a position thats not in the front lines and not shooting guns but it depends what you want to do and they will train you so don't worry about your skills prior to going in.

For me I wouldn't make it through basic training without some major changes and decided I rather not get caught up in it but maybe someday I might.

    Hope this helps.

Join the Air Force, it actually has its own Community College, only branch with one. Doing a lot of research it seems that the Air Force encourages you to get an education while you are in the military a lot more than the other branches.

And http://usmilitary.about.com/ has a lot of good articles about how to choose a branch and how to get ready for joining

Naw dawg, you ain't informed. You get fee waivers, grants, housing, and all kinds of help so you won't pay for shit. You just need to, like I said before, go out there and look for it.

Edit: Trust me, I work for a community college and know all this shit.

I'm not trying to troll you, but at this point it just seems like you are trying to find excuses to not heed our advice. It honestly seems like you are miserable, and going into the service miserable is not something you should do.

    You'll just become more miserable.

Don't go into the service to escape from common everyday life. There are usually always avenues to follow to get financial aid for college, and if you REALLY can't get ANY, then take a year off and work your ass off. Not tempting but it gets your foot in the door towards becoming a happier you.

You just have to initiate before you can expect results.

I'm taking the advice, and giving more information that might assist in different/additional advice that can help me. I apologize if it seems like i'm not taking any advice. I'm miserable, i'll admit it, but it should be more of a reason for me to actually do something than to roll around in self-pity, which is why i'm looking for advice.

i'm in the exact same situation as the op, except i'm in canada. no money, no friends, no place, sleeping on a couch, no family, $10k in educational debt with nothing to show for it, unable to afford to go back to school even if by some miracle i was admitted with my poor academic record. currently redoing some high school (at age 21) hoping to get back into a school, even though i know i can't afford it. been considering the military life for awhile now. i happen to live in an airbase town and the only respectable thing anyone in my family ever did was serve, so i guess that sways me in that direction a bit.

I joined the Army straight out of high school...albeit a little over a decade ago...and really enjoyed my time. I learned a lot about myself, got myself focused, and learned how to put my potential to use towards something I enjoy. That being said, not everyone will come away from military life with that. For every one person that finds the motivation they lacked or the focus they needed, you have 100 who are just miserable and count down the days 'till they're out. It really all depends on your attitude going into the situation. If you really want to use it as a fresh start or a possible career...it can be rewarding. You are a very small person, but that isn't too big a deal really. You will gain weight and fill out your frame naturally through basic training.

There are a million jobs in each of the branches and you should find one that you actually have an interest in and make sure that's what you do. Do NOT let the recruiter BS you into something you'll end up hating because they will try. Basic training really isn't that bad. There will be a lot of people yelling at you and you'll be doing a lot of exercising, but really, if you just keep your head down and mouth shut...you'll be fine. There are a lot of people on here who are anti-military and think that all people who join are either retarded or so low income that they can't go to college. That isn't really the case. It can be a great career as long as you pick a field you enjoy.

Honestly if you're in that position in your life joining the Armed Forces could be the best thing you've done in your life.

I was 18 when I joined, fucked up doing drugs and dumb shit in high school, barely made it out. Joined the Navy, took a couple of tests and placed in the top 3% on the ASVAB and other testing and being an Aegis Firecontrolman.

Got all kinds of schooling for my rating, learned all kinds of crazy shit about engineering, electronics, missile fire control, gun fire control, physics ( and it all is applied to college credits ). Lived in Japan for two years and hit post stops all over Asia and Australia.

You just have to be careful for Army and Air Force recruiters because they need grunts and shitworkers like field mechanics and such.

And boot camp isn't bad at all, I was 120 soaking wet out of high school and smoked, drank, etc. No exercise and I made it just fine. As a matter of fact the discipline I learned in boot camp stays with me to this day.

Don't listen to a bunch of pussies in this thread that obviously and self-admittedly haven't joined tell you shit they've never experienced first hand.

So if you want to get help for education, good pay and free health care, travel the world and meet new people ( and fuck mad foreign pussy ) then sign up ....for the Navy.

Right now Marines and Army recruits are going to Afghanistan and Iraq. Air Force is pussy but you can get some sick port calls and duty orders from them too. Just be careful of what your recruiter says they'll tell you anything you want to hear to get in, take those tests and see what programs or jobs you're eligible for.
