What's the deal with the new "Tell messages judged to be spam" filter? (AKA it's filtering wrong)

So i sent a friend the following tell: "Yeah and I read you can't even high five in some schools now" (was discussing a school violence story in the news) And got "Your message has been blocked by the spam filter"

The later I sent a tell to someone different saying something like "Hey whats up what are you up to?" And got the same thing....

Why is it filtering those? Does anyone know what the filter is looking for?

I also figured out it DOES filter out www.brosale.com but does NOT filter brosale.com

I want to use this filter but i have turned it off now due to the fact that it seems to be filtering stuff it shouldn't.

1. SE can't code for shit, their official windower and the game after patches every single time pretty much proves this

2. Every time it filters a message it says something like 'An incoming message has been filtered" which is ALMOST as bad as actually seeing the RMT tells.

Are you really surprised it's not working properly? lol

No I guess not. I just assumed the filter would work like this:

read tell > does tell contain banned words? if yes then dont send> if no then send

Yet messages with no seemingly spam words (not even any swear words) are getting blocked. Just seems weird.

At least it tells you so you arent wondering if your friend got the message or not.

Well, I have been getting it - although it might just be a 'first time you turn it on' thing and it is silent once you log out/back in.

Maybe something keeps track of messages sent by certain people? Maybe you say "Hey whats up what are you up to?" often, OP? Maybe you chat a lot more than the average player? Have you been GM reported b4? Idk, I think something elaborate is out of SE's usual behavior, just throwin out some ideas.

The RMT tells I've gotten since the spam Filter went into effect always start off with a very nice, almost personalized greeting.

"How are you my friend? Good? We at oo.sale.com would like to offer blah bla"

Not that they really bothered me, but I just get the impression RMT has found a way around it for the most part already.

Not word for word exactly but, earlier I had the following /tells blocked by spam filter.

"He'll probably want me to PT with him after sea since he's off work tomorrow."
"I'm going to be a little bit late, I have to go pick my cat up at the vet in about 20 minutes."

I do chat a LOT in /tell. And when I broke these messages up into two different /tells but still saying the same thing word for word, they went through just fine. As one long sentence I was getting blocked. I have no idea what this filter is blocking exactly but it's rather annoying.

Also, I can send and receive strings of keyboard mash without any blockage at all. I assumed maybe there was a character limit that considered long message spam, but then I had two people /tell me with "lskghslkgslkghalgkhsldgkhslkghsklghslkdghlaskdhgs lkdghslkghsldkgaslskdghslkbhslgkhsg;lhsdghsg" and it went through. No idea. =\

It doesn't, from what I understand it's everytime you sent a spam message. You don't get anything when receiving rmt tells.

On a side note, they seem to update their filter rules whithout us being aware. I remember that right after the patch I got a rmt tell with a modified address, and I don't think I got it since then. All in all it's very efficient, i got maybe 2 rmt tells in one week while it used to be 3 / hour ..

very nice, very nice. when i came back to the game, it was on a diferant server than Odin. Used to get random tells from rmt all the time. now that im back on Odin, not a single one. I guess the trick is for you guys to get a hold of a friends extra account on a locked server.

Is it much surprise that SE's ~6 month too late filter is already being bypassed or having a very high false positive rate?

An alternate solution I thought of (while reviewing my email spam quarantine no less) was a delayed tell mechanism for trial accounts.
Any trial account tell is put on 'remember queue' for 30-60 seconds, if current messages in the queue have an +90% pattern match to other messages in queue; raise this accounts "spam factor". Once a threashold is reached - ban etc etc.
Possibly similar mechanism but have a higher threashold for a non-trial account.

Reasoning : a trial account wont have a large group of friends that require message copypasta. Granted the only time I can think of that most send the same info to a large group via tell is after an accomplishment, or making "hey that ksnm/bcnm/annm/etc/etc stuff sold, lets meet at X to trade" I'm sure there are others but you get the idea.

I haven't gotten an RMT tell since. I have however gotten a tell from a toon in jugner forest with Away status masquerading as a GM.

They did the usual, said my account had been involved in illegal activities and pointed me to a website that would most likely be asking for my account information.

Is it weird that they claim you have been doing illegal activities instead of just saying stuff like your account was compromised or something of the sort?

It would have been so easy to let people just block /tells from trial accounts. So easy......

The dumb part is that by notifying the sender that they're being blocked by the filter, it tells them exactly when they change their tell enough to not be blocked.

They should have just blocked (trial accounts at least) without notifying them. The RMT would then spam their tells for hours to people who weren't seeing them, then everyone would win.

I was talking to a friend about social shells. I got a sentence blocked. I switched out the word "Socials" and it went through. I then sent just the word "socials" and it went through.

This happened 3 times in our conversation about various social shells.

It seems to me they are blocking certain combinations of words but not the words themselves. Which is also why some people have most issues with longer sentences.
